Arizona wants to have people show birth gender before using public restrooms

Posted

By CRISTINA SILVA Associated PressPHOENIX March 20, 2013 (AP)A prominent Republican lawmaker in Arizona wants to link public bathroomuse to birth certificates in what civil rights advocates are callingthe nation's toughest anti-transgender measure. The bill would require people to use public restrooms, dressing rooms orlocker rooms associated with the sex listed on their birth certificateor face six months in jail. The proposal had been scheduled for a vote Wednesday during a House ofRepresentatives committee. But in an unusual scene for the usually staidhalls of state government, men in dresses, women in business suits andother transgender supporters crowded into the committee room and thelobby of the House to protest the legislation.Minutes after the meeting started, state Rep. John Kavanagh said hewould delay the debate on his bill because of a paperwork error.... The term transgender covers men and women whose identity does not matchwith their birth-assigned sex, including cross-dressers and people whodon't want to alter their bodies hormonally or surgically....More than 100 cities and counties have passed laws prohibiting gender-identity discrimination, including Phoenix, Atlanta, New Orleans and Dallas. Those laws are also not uniform. For example, Baltimore County in Maryland approved a measure in 2012 protecting transgender people from discrimination. It did not apply to "distinctly private or personal" facilities. Tennessee lawmakers tried going in the other direction with a proposal similar to Arizona's in 2012, but it failed to gain support....In Arizona, where Republicans control state government, Kavanagh saidgovernment shouldn't allow people to use facilities based on "you arewhat you think you are." He said he was worried an anti-discriminationban passed in Phoenix last month would serve as a cover for pedophileswho want to expose themselves to children of the opposite gender."This law simply restores the law of society: Men are men and women arewomen," he said. "For a handful of people to make everyone elseuncomfortable just makes no sense."

So what do you guys think about this?

why do people have to make a big deal out of everything (I mean this arizona politician) like just let them use the bathroom why is this so hard I literally just don't understand?? like it's a bathroom you shouldn't seriously need to be a certain gender just to go to the bathroom it's like a freaking bodily function not some sexual thing.

Fine, whatever you say. I won't change my opinion though.

I haven't been this pissed off in a while.

Honestly?  People like you are why other people have a negative opinion of Christians.  And by your logic, you should accept their dislike because hey it's their opinion and anything they say is automatically invalid!  No, wait, you won't accept it.  You're too stuck up and trapped in your own little bubble to see how much your it's my opinion deal with it affects others.  It's what you believe in and it's all you need to know.  Guess what, dude?  Even if you can't see it, opinions can still hurt.  Opinions can still damage.  "It's my opinion, don't tell me how to think, I'm entitled to my beliefs," are why people out there get the short end of the stick.  You're so thickheaded and stubborn in your beliefs you can't or refuse to see how it affects others.

I can predict that, just like any good, ignorant Christian, you'll just brush this off.  You'll happily stick to your opinion no matter what it does to other human beings.  I guess you're an example of how much value Christians place on human beings who aren't them.  So go ahead, ignore everything I said with a "whatever" and continue believing in what you believe in without understanding what it does to others.  You don't see a problem with anything because it's not like it affects you.

I'll have you know that not all christians are like that and it's wrong to generalize all as such .I'm a christian and i also know many others like me who place plenty of value on others and don't support bigotry .

I know, but the other guy isn't really helping your guys's case.  Your words would carry more weight than mine, so maybe you can shut him up.  He'd be more inclined to listen, I think.

When it comes to certain subjects like religion or politics, some won't hear out someone elses opinion let alone listen to it .They become so adament that they won't allow themselves to see there are valid opposing opinions. It's like a neverending fight with no conclusion .
