Worthington police officers say there has been an increase in burglaries in the city within the last few weeks; but they may have a new lead thanks to new technology.
Officers were called to a residence on East Selby Boulevard in March on a report of a burglary.
According to officers, the suspects took a flat screen television, laptops, an iPad, cash, jewelry and a Play Station 3.
The victim says the suspects kicked down the door and moved around his home like they knew where they were going.
He says he had most of the serial numbers already written down for the items that were taken, but it was a mistake made by one of the suspects that actually led investigators to the stolen items.
According to detectives, the night following the burglary, one of the suspects logged onto the stolen Play Station 3 system and sent a message to one of the victim's co-workers. Detectives were able to track the message and narrow down the suspect's location.
Worthington police contacted Sony and AT&T to obtain the location and worked for more than a month to confirm the location and the suspect's identity.
Detectives say the man they caught with the stolen PlayStation 3 is just one of the suspects in the case. They believe they are close to catching more people responsible for the recent burglaries in the area.
