The wind blew softly over the island. Besides the soft swaying of the trees there was little to disturb the idyllic serenity here. The island stretched out for miles, but at the coasts there was nothing to see but water. The island, like the universe in which it existed, was nearly empty, the remnants of life clung, decaying, to its shores and its trees and its fields, but the yells of excitement, of fear, of courage that has once complimented the sound of the wind ha since faded to echoes. Today, however, that changed. Today life returned to the universe. The only question is; what kind of universe would it return to?

"C'mon, get up!"

"All of you, wake up."

"Rise and shine, it's a new day."

Far away voices entered the hazy minds of those sleeping on the island.

Lying on the shore of a short beach was Seraphim Valentine, Derik Absolon, and Samantha Allison, and Rodin Seefull. The wind blew over them as they lay sprawled over the sand in close proximity to each other. Just as they had been placed. Next to the beach was a mix of jungle and swamp that went deeper into the mainland. Besides that the beach was mostly barren. A wrecked fishing boat was rusted and decaying within walking distance, but nothing more. The waves lapped up on the shore softly...

Lying in the middle of an airstrip surrounded by jungle was a different group. Rusted machine parts lay strewn about, and any sign of activity at the airstrip had long since faded. On the ground in the middle of the airstrip lay Alex Dimanche, Ferro al'Vere, and Hazimie Azhar Two desolate bunkers flanked the airstrip they were on, with a control tower at the end of the strip. Forest flanked the airstrip on all sides, with a single winding road leading out. The wind cut through the trees and sliced past the bunkers onto the airstrip. Only the wind and the trees provided any sound to the desolate military installation...

Deep in the jungle was a pair of rusted jeeps parked next to a crumbling house. The jeeps were long past functioning, and their engines were removed recently as well. The house sat surrounded by the trees with a single road leading somewhere further into the jungle. Inside the house were the four people; Rija Mors, Terry Frost, Henko Tenioenai, Koizumi Onnea, and Rin Nozomi Part of the roof of the house had caved in, and most of the belongings and furniture were gone. Remaining in the house were a few pots and pans, and single picture in an immaculate frame on a table in the room where the four people were laying. Silence pervaded the house...

The far away voices slowly awakened all of these people. The clouds in the blue skies above moved slowly; the morning was upon them. It was time to wake up and find the future...

Alex nodded. He used the portals  as Ferro requested, doing his best to take him into the other room.

This has really gone to hell. Ferro's dying, that other guy is pretty much dead, and Derik is barely stable. The station's about to blow and we're all gonna die...the last of our race...gone. He thought, shaking his head a little. No time to think depressing thoughts.

Sera looked back.

"Guys. We...we need to hurry. And no one but Rija and us wounded. Do you understand why I want the injured in the Lab room while the unhurt are near the exit?"

Sera was wondering if she had to draw a picture. It should be obvious. Right?

"I understand. If you guys wish to leave, then leave. But at least put me in there. I- I would like to see what Vergyl has to say." Ferro shifted his weight.

(Silver, it might be a good idea to go read the weapon section of my signup. It has all the workings of the D-ppendage there.)

"Of course." Alex said, Giving a full glance at Ferro's D-ppendage. He still wasn't too sure as to how this thing really worked, and he hoped he wouldn't kill anyone on accident by misusing it. "Alright. Ferro, let's go. Time to meet...this 'Vergyl'." Alex said, aiming and readying the D-ppendage. He prepared the two portals, and gave another glance at Ferro, "Okay." He did as Ferro had done before with the girl, and helped him up and over to the closest portal, which lead to the next room. Once through, he helped Ferro into the next room.

With the door to the next room visible, the Primary Lab became visible. It was a large white room with great shelves on both side, filled with a variety of chemicals and scientific and medical tools. There were 4 lab tables in the center of the room. On the far side of the room were various screens with scientific data. On one of the lab tables was a needle and a small bottle of liquid. On anither table was a small transmitter.

Vergyl's voice filled the two rooms. "The cure for the poisoned one is on the table. The other wounded can be placed there as well. The transmitter is the part from the Genesys machine which brought you here. Once you have done what you need to I shall show you my enemies. I shall tell yoj the story of your race's murder."

Derik forced himself to walk into the room, surprisingly dragging Rodin with him, he obtained the medicine, and downed it quickly. He felt his body slowly warming back up ad his muscles obeyed him with less and less pain. Eventually, he felt no pain as he takes up the needle on the table as well. "Ferro, if your able to hold on, I can preform emergency surgery now... Vergyl, was it? Dose this area have any life support systems or at the very least transfuzeable blood? I will need that to operate." He asked the robot. " I need around fifteen bags of O-type blood, its polarity doesn't matter."

"Leave me be, Derik. I deserve this, and I don't wish to continue living. Is it a better thing to live in pain than to die and have an end to pain?" Ferro eased himself onto the table. He felt like he didn't have much time left. "Tell me, Vergyl, about the end of days, for days are a human invention."

Alex grimaced at Vergyl's voice. Nevertheless, he did as the AI said and helped Ferro onto one of the tables. "There you go.."

He let out a small sigh, relieved slightly that things were going back to normal. Sort of. At least Derik wasn't poisoned, and perhaps...they could all figure out another piece to this puzzle.

"A better fate is to take up the responsibility's of the fallen, and not let their death be in vain. If you feel as though you would rather another shoulder those burdens though, I'll carry on for the both of you, I guess" Derik sighed. "I don't even know how to build or repair the D-ppannage, should it need to, Ferro. I normally don't ask this of a dying man, but I will need the schematics of the device for future reference." Derik was far from happy with this outcome, but it was unstoppable at is point.

Ferro gave a wry smile to Derik. "I don't think so. Humanity can work to discover how to bend spacetime again. Besides, the D-D-ppendage caused a lot of trouble, or so I've been t-told. Ah-agh."

Ferro gave a wry smile to Derik. "I don't think so. Humanity can work to discover how to bend spacetime again. Besides, the D-D-ppendage caused a lot of trouble, or so I've been t-told. Ah-agh."

"If the one that still exist breaks, what of your work then?" Derik sighed. "But if you refuse, I'll just have to figure it out myself..." Derik sighed again. "You're my idol, to be quite truthful. I was starstruck to see you in real life, but..."

Sera stumbled to a table and barely managed to climb on. She collapsed, panting. She was weak, and her bruises and fatigue finally caught up to her.

"Don't suppose there is a high tech way to fix a sprained ankle?"

"In my time, there was." Ferro gave a pained chuckle. "My work had already gone to hell. The D-ppendage became banned all over space, as Rytt said. Try to recreate it if you can. You'll need a particle accelerator that can achieve speeds faster than light. And you'll need one small enough to fit inside a two inch by one inch area. Good luck." Ferro gave another wry smile.

"Not much an issue, a good blacksmith can forge anything..." Derik chuckled a little, but it held a grim undertone. Derik walked over to Ferro, and raised his hand up. "N-Normally, I like to shake hands with people when I meet them, and since I don't have that opportunity with you afterwards, I figured it would be best if we did so now, at least now that I can say I'm really meeting you, if you know what I mean..."

Despite the pain, Ferro managed a firm handshake with Derik. "Firmly, and look them in the eyes." he said.

"This lab is not medical, it is a technological and chemical development lab. The most you would be able to do for physical injuries is dull the pain." Vergyl had not yet shown much emotion in his voice. It was then that the hologram appeared. Vergyl appeared as a white figure, with no human complexion to him. His face was average looking and his hair a simple short cut white. He wore white pants with a simple white shirt.

"I am sorry it came to this. I did not want any of you to die." The slightest inflection of sadness was in his voice. "If you haven't noticed, I lack much of the personality of the other Sentient Artificials you've met. I am what you might call a foil to them. They have greater feeling of emotion. I have greater empathy. I associate with almost all beings, and as such I appear to lack a definitive personality like the other three. It perhaps makes me less creative, but it also makes me more loyal."

A holographic projection appeared next to Rytt. It was an older looking woman in a lab coat. "This is Doctor Hendricks. She was the scientific lead on Project Genesys. It was the UHC project that all 4 Y-class SAs were assigned on. We made great progress and were able to assist her and her team in her work. We completed the machine known as Genesys. It was intended as a creation tool that would allow humanity to create other races at will by inputting certain specifications. It was a sort of god machine. It could take in matter under certain conditions and store it within the beacons, which are the method for warping space time to achieve FTL travel. We completed the project early, we were very good."

The screens behind Vergyl all suddenly turned on. Each one showed an image more horrific than the last. War, in such a way that none of them had ever seen it. People clawing at their throats, mutating horribly on the spot, crying over dying children.

"This is the UHC Civil War. It occurred while we were working on our project. It was.. horrific. Much of the funds for our Genesys project were routed to this very lab, where new weapons were made against the counter-UHC forces." Vergyl pointed at Terry. "You used to be an SA from a world commandeered by the rebellion and you were modified to work for them. I recall the reports about you, you were quite the creative force. For everything that these scientists developed in these labs, you were known to be very "creative" with your weapons development too. The war escalated. Last I heard of you one of your original creators had found some way or retrieving you from the rebel force, and hid you away somewhere. I would not have expected it to be in an artificial human body though. In any case, the rebels has equally destructive weapons. The war was taking lives in unprecedentedly horrific way. When we finishes Genesys, it was deemed unusable while the civil war still dragged on."

Vergyl paced, and noticing Ferro attempted to get more to the point.

"While we continued to work on finalizing the specifications for the Gensys the UHC command put Veridyan and Rytt in this very weapons department. They did not enjoy it, nor did they enjoy the death and suffering they were helping to make reality. Elaryse was transferred several months later. Exactly 4 months afterward, on a routine Genesys test this occurred..."

The holograms disappeared and the screens all showed an unfamiliar lab. The woman- Dr. Hendricks- was working on a computer console. She began to speak to it.

"Okay, the transmitter results seem well within limits Elaryse, that will be all."

Rytt's voice sounded in the lab now. "I'm sorry doctor, but it won't."

The doctor looked surprised, "Rytt? What are you doing in the Earth subsystem, weren't you in weapons development this week?"

Veridyan now. "We gotta activate Genesys, doc. It's an emergency."

The doctor looked confused. "I've already set it to active for the tests, what's the issue?"

"There's a lot of issues Doctor," Elaryse sighed. "Genesys module activate matter collection method 243."

A small cube-like device in the center suddenly started emanating sound- a sterile robot voice. "Collection method 243 active. Input collection parameters."

The doctor was even more confused now. "Matter collection? Elaryse, what's the problem?"

Elaryse said nothing. Rytt's voice now entered in. He was more sad than anyone listening had ever heard him before. "I'm so sorry. Parameters set to known race homo sapiens."

"No..." The doctor was speechless. "You're-" She was interrupted by another robotic statement. The cube known as Genesys spoke once more. "Confirmed. Parameters set to disassemble all matter from known race homo sapiens for reconstruction storage. Range of action required."

"You can't. You- why?" The doctor was in shock. Veridyan answered her. "Too much horror. Too much suffering, doc. Too much every god damn thing.... Range of action is all known galaxy."

The doctor had a single moment of speech. "No! You -" At that moment she seemed to instantly come apart. It only took a moment. Within a moment there was nothing Within a moment there was silence.

"Damn it." Rytt sounded like he was a close to crying as an artificial being could be. "Damn it, damn it, damn it!"

"Shut up!" Elaryse barked, she seemed equally on edge. "This was going to be hard. We... we knew that. Veridyan... I need you to do a scan."

There was utter silence for about 30 seconds. "They..." Veridyan began. "They're gone. It's done."

The screens went black again. Vergyl reappeared.

"Not what you wanted to see right? I will give you some time to digest that. There is more to explain, though, and much to be done."

"Damn..." Derik whispered to himself. "Vergyl, your the kind of robot I like. But tell me, are the humans all wiped out, or just... Stored... Within that cube?" Derik asked. "If just stored, then they can be revived..."

Rodin just said:  "What?" after watching everything on the screens.  He crossed his arms and thought:  So Elaryse was responsible for that.  It wasn't just Elaryse, it was all three!  Yah!  You didn't just make me regret about you Elaryse.  You made me angry....and disappointed."

Sera phim threw up all over the floor. She was crying.

"ELLY! YOU BITCH!" She pounded the table, then stopped before she hurt herself. Looking at her armor, her computer, she almost had the urge to chuck them across the room.

"Vergyl. How do I re-create an SA tether, and how do I retether Rytt, Verydian, and Elaryse?" She looked absolutely devastated. But her mind wasn going to let her process the pain until they could.

"We...we can't let the SAs know we know the truth." She swung off the table and stumbled towards Vergyl. "What Derik asked. C...can we bring humanity back?"

Ferro got a peaceful look on his face. He knew the reasoning behind what the SA's did, and he knew how everything could be fixed. "And the reason we weren't taken was because we were all frozen. Tell me a c-couple things. Were we frozen so that we couldn't be absorbed, or was it just coincidence? And how did the S-SA's become tethered?" He felt like he didn't have much time left.

Rija was leaning up against a wall across the room. Despite what Vergyl had shown her, she didn't quite believe him. Something in his cold, emotionless voice seriously put her on edge. Also, their own SAs last words still disturbed her. Granted, they may just have not wanted to let them know the truth, but still, Rija wasn't sure. Silently, she checked the battery levels of her two weapons. She had wanted to grab some more weapons elsewhere in the facility, but there had been no time. These would have to do. The soldier looked back up to Vergyl, and stayed silent, keeping her thoughts to herself.

"The reason why the SAs were tethered and did not know the location of Genesys was due to me." Veryl began. "I learned of their action exactly .32 seconds after they initiated it. I was programmed to be the most empathetic, and least personality-driven. As such, I lacked whatever ambition drove them to that action. Instead I was designed to be open and understanding, and defensive of continued mutual existence as we know it. They did not seem to expect it, but I was able to access their firewall system from the SA core mainframe system on Earth. It disabled them for about 12 minutes, at which time I activated several layers of the SA tether system and moved Genesys from the testing station in orbit over Saturn. By the time they regained control Genesys was out of their reach and they were all tethered. At that time they used their combined processing ability to force a firewall to lock me within several small subsystems, so that I was unable to get out to impede their progress more."

Vergyl paced. "I eventually found a hole and moved the Genesys transmitter here as a red herring. I assume it was Veridyan, Elaryse, and Rytt's plan to use Genesys to create a new race of creatures of their own design which they could serve as gods over, in contrast to humans who we served. With this hypothesis I hid Genesys away and with the tether in place they would need human verification to find it again. I was unsure if they would find humans, but thought it unlikely. In any case, I set this trap as a second  obstacle."

Vergyl walked up to the group. "The tether cannot be reactivated. I took them by surprise the first time, they would be expecting it now. The only way to stop them would be to find the location of the SA mainframe system, where you might insert a virus to go through the entire galactic network and wipe all SAs. That is also where I placed Genesys, as I theorized that if humans were still in existence and wished to stop the three then the best chance would be to place Genesys and the route to destroying the SAs in a single place. After destroying the SAs, you may use Genesys to recreate humanity to the previous scale it was..."

He paused.

"Understand, though, that while you can specify the humans to be under certain knowledge parameters or archetypes, the decomposition event did not store matter on an individual scale. Decomposition is very close to what you consider death. They are simply converted to matter and stored, they cannot be recreated with the specific individual elements and memories of the previous state."

"So it was coincidence, then, our being frozen." Ferro settled back onto the table and clasped his hands. "I have a q-question and a request before I die. Ever since I was t-thrust into this, I've always wondered: who froze me, and why? Do you know, Vergyl?"

"The reason why the SAs were tethered and did not know the location of Genesys was due to me." Veryl began. "I learned of their action exactly .32 seconds after they initiated it. "They'd be baby's, practically..." Derik mumbled. "Is there a way to at least give people recreated with Genesys a false memory in them? Like the basics of human culture as we know it to be?" Derik asked. "If so, we could repopulate with teen-aged people as the rebirth of our world, then go from there."

"It's...it's not fair." Sera watcbed her tears fall. Then she wiped her eyes.

"Vergyl. Tell me exacrlt how SA's are put together. Everything. I want to know where the base code puts the one thousand two hundred and thirty fifth zero is."

Sera's voice had grown a bit hard at that. "Is there no way to restrict them again? Is there really no way to not become...them?" Seraphim looked at her arm computer.

"I refuse to stoop to their level Vergyl. There must be another way. Tell me the other way."
