The wind blew softly over the island. Besides the soft swaying of the trees there was little to disturb the idyllic serenity here. The island stretched out for miles, but at the coasts there was nothing to see but water. The island, like the universe in which it existed, was nearly empty, the remnants of life clung, decaying, to its shores and its trees and its fields, but the yells of excitement, of fear, of courage that has once complimented the sound of the wind ha since faded to echoes. Today, however, that changed. Today life returned to the universe. The only question is; what kind of universe would it return to?

"C'mon, get up!"

"All of you, wake up."

"Rise and shine, it's a new day."

Far away voices entered the hazy minds of those sleeping on the island.

Lying on the shore of a short beach was Seraphim Valentine, Derik Absolon, and Samantha Allison, and Rodin Seefull. The wind blew over them as they lay sprawled over the sand in close proximity to each other. Just as they had been placed. Next to the beach was a mix of jungle and swamp that went deeper into the mainland. Besides that the beach was mostly barren. A wrecked fishing boat was rusted and decaying within walking distance, but nothing more. The waves lapped up on the shore softly...

Lying in the middle of an airstrip surrounded by jungle was a different group. Rusted machine parts lay strewn about, and any sign of activity at the airstrip had long since faded. On the ground in the middle of the airstrip lay Alex Dimanche, Ferro al'Vere, and Hazimie Azhar Two desolate bunkers flanked the airstrip they were on, with a control tower at the end of the strip. Forest flanked the airstrip on all sides, with a single winding road leading out. The wind cut through the trees and sliced past the bunkers onto the airstrip. Only the wind and the trees provided any sound to the desolate military installation...

Deep in the jungle was a pair of rusted jeeps parked next to a crumbling house. The jeeps were long past functioning, and their engines were removed recently as well. The house sat surrounded by the trees with a single road leading somewhere further into the jungle. Inside the house were the four people; Rija Mors, Terry Frost, Henko Tenioenai, Koizumi Onnea, and Rin Nozomi Part of the roof of the house had caved in, and most of the belongings and furniture were gone. Remaining in the house were a few pots and pans, and single picture in an immaculate frame on a table in the room where the four people were laying. Silence pervaded the house...

The far away voices slowly awakened all of these people. The clouds in the blue skies above moved slowly; the morning was upon them. It was time to wake up and find the future...

"Maybe I shouldn't be the one to do this, but I'm going after him." Rija said. She looked Seraphim in the eyes, and she saw a determination she used to only see in the mirror. Rija nodded towards her in understanding. Sometimes a girl just has to do something. Rija jogged out of the room, to stop behind Derik. She put her hand on his shoulder. The soldier moved in front of him, to look him in the eyes. "Hey. Listen. You made it this far for a reason. There is no going back. The only thing you can do is move forward, and hope everything turns out all right. Look out for yourself first, then worry about everybody else. I know that everyone tells you to look out for everybody, team mentality and all, but most of the time, that's just too much burden for one person. Sera has made her choice. You have to respect that, and hope she makes it back, rather than just go and kill yourself with her." Rija said, in as much a comforting tone as she could manage. As much as she disliked this guy sometimes, he had a noble motive, and a good heart. He just needed some help in the methods. Rija hoped he could see that himself.

"You don't understand. You just don't." She let him leave. "Rodin. The programs are triggered by thought. They do all the work." She looked at Wing's hologram. "Rodin. I know you two don't leave men behind. But you're not leaving me behind. I have to hold the line. You need the other four at Earth for when they do arrive. I know what I can do, and your close combat APs will only be hinderances. You saved me once Rodi . Let me return the favor. If I die, then it means those SAs have no remorse, no chance to change." She paused. "Rodin. Please. Someone has to slow them down. Vergyl can't, I can't through my normal means. But...I know what I can do. And it means you all have to go. So take Lagann, carry who you can. Make sure those are ready...because they will arrive. They will try and kill you from afar and not care for colateral. Rodin. Get Derik to understand. You need to get to Earth...and make sure you get the virus uploaded. Make sure you bring humanity back." She taped his forehead. "I know leaving someone behind is hard. But you're not leaving me. I'm staying, and I'm going to buy you time. Time to ensure the SA's don't win."

Sera looked at the door Derik exited. "Make him understand. Vergyl. Give me what I need to get me to Wing. I have a hairbrained workable, anime-worthy plan that requires schematics. And the biggest chunk of luck you ever."

"You mean God will bless and watch over you."  Rodin replies to Seraphim.  In a more positive and upbeat attitude, he says to her:  "Alright.  If that's how you feel about it Sera, then okay.  I won't go out of my way to try and stop you.  I'll just have to pray to the Lord for you to make it out safe and sound.  But you can't give the software stuff to me.  I only know the basics of computer applications, so I won't be any help with it."  Rodin paused for a minute and says:  "Vergyl, can you please tell me where Laganns' hangar is at?  I want to be inside the cockpit and check the systems."  Rodin just stood in one place after all that's been said.  After a minute, he says:  "You know Sera, it never really hurts to depend on others.  To me, the word means of trusting people that would help you out. People who would give it everything they have to support you with anything and everything they can do.  It's especially the case if they want to help you no matter what and really care about you."

Sigh. I wish somebody would plug me into a computer with a webcam or something. Or maybe the holo-console Vergyl is using. I suppose I'm still stuck inside my neck, clasped in my hand. Funny, I don't see the body I once inhabited as mine anymore, really. It was a limitation. I can see why the rich chose to go down this path. I can also see why many of them went insane, too. I won't go insane. I can't. For her.

"I just... I can't do that.." Derik turned away from Rija. "I... I came from a time where everyone was cruel. I never received any love just because I was me. Even my own parents hated me. One day, I ran away when I was young..." He closed his eyes, recalling the memory. "I don't remember why, but I did. The next day, I saw a flyer on the wall of a shop. Not a "missing child" poster, but one for a gigantic party. The hosts were my parents. I confronted them about it that day, they simply just looked me in the eye and told me that they'd whished they had aborted me, then kicked me into the near-by bushes." He opened his eyes, tears running down them. "They laughed as they walked back inside. I never even heard their voices from that day on again." He sighed, going onto his story's end. "My education, if that's anything to call it, mainly was me doing simple chores for people for not anything more than a "you didn't fail this time" from my teacher, and my friends... They didn't like me either. They just put up with me because I wouldn't leave them alone. Because I wanted friends, or at least someone to talk to." He sighed again. "I came to this time to see if people developed hearts by now, so I didn't feel like the care I gave them wasn't being wasted, but now were here. I feel like I need to be there for everyone, even if it is impossible; because no one was there for me dosen't mean I won't be for them."

Rija realized that the problem was deeper than she initially thought. Still, she had volunteered to help. Rija popped back up in front of Derik. She wiped the tears from his eyes. "I always had people who loved me, so I can't say I know exactly what you went through, but I can try. I'm a soldier. I had to take multiple human lives. Seeing their last moments is practically as painful for me as it was for them. Not to mention seeing the death of many of my comrades. In battle, I may be the lone survivor in my squad. Happened once. I can't say it didn't hurt. It did. An emptiness in my heart. I still hold parts of my heart for my fallen friends. But I keep fighting for them. Fighting may not be the best choice, but it's all I have. I'm sure that you decided to go into cryo, for more than a few reasons. But keep in mind that all of us did. Now, you have to hold your head high, and keep fighting for those that didn't make it as far as you did. I've seen you in action. You have many talents that could help us. Keep in mind, that by keeping yourself alive, you've already saved lives, and you can save more. So survive for the ones you can save, and trust that the others you can't save are good enough to save themselves." Rija made eye contact. She could see how far his pain stretched back.

"I don't know..." Derik muttered. "I just wish... I wish we had a moment's reprieve... I just think I need a break from everything and to just be back in my old workshop..." He looked around, the area was.dim and Henko's body lay.on the floor, dead. "I'm sure that I just want to..." Derik muttered. He looked at the chemical stocks over on the racks. "I... I just had an idea... Just a little something to ease the tension..." He walked over to the chemicals, then picked up a few flasks if materials, then took a small hole out of one of the racks and used the piece he took to make a little marble, halted and disposed of the center of one of the halves, filled it with each material, put the two haves back together, and placed his sword on the ground and the marble on top. "A little vision mist..." He muttered, activating the electricity. The marble quickly exploded, and a small, light gas filled the room. "I made this stuff to allow me to see my dreams in reality, back in our time. It's non-harmful, just projects one's dreams on it for everyone to share: weather made by sleep or just a whim you have... Show me what you dream..."

As Sera stared Rodin down, she began to sing softly.

"Lately I've been - I've been losing sleep...dreamin' 'bout the things we could be...baby I've been, I've been praying hard...so no more counting dollars, we'll be countin' stars...we'll be counting stars..."

She patted her thighs like drums, relaxing.

"Because what kills me makes me feel alive.."

Sera waited for her answer, doing what she had once loved to do - sing along with her favorite bands because why the hell not.

After a minute, Rodin says:  "Now that I think about it, you talk as if you're going out on a one-last-outing attempt, which I'm not liking to hear.  Like I said, I only know the basics of Com Apps.  But if what you say is true, I guess I'll do it, but I won't like it.  About Derik, I could do that, but I think someone else has that covered."

Sera smiled softly, then pecked Rodin on the cheek.

"Just initiate the program, and it does the rest. I made them automatic to save trouble. If I don't return...then you have some hacking ability." She paused. "And good. Now go get everyone ready. I'll go show those SA's why you don't destroy any chance of meeting my family ever again. Vergyl! This will sound utterly pathetic but if I survive, think I could make the perfect girlfriend with Genesys?" She asked somewhat seriously, partly trying to take her mind off of the upcoming hell.

Rodin started blushing after that action.  He scratched his head nervously and says:  "Aw shucks."  He then thinks:  "Perfect girlfriend with Genesys"?!?  What?!  I don't care if that's a joke or serious question, that's hurtful!  Rodins says:  "Really Vergyl, where's Laganns' hangar?  Seriously, I want to get in the cockpit as soon as possible!"

I wonder if they've forgotten about me. Will I spend eternity trapped in a little black box? No, Vergyl hasn't forgotten. I remember my whole life right now, down to the smallest detail. I remember her.

Rija smiled slightly at Derik. "Ok." She said to him, before closing her eyes, and focusing on what she wanted. The mist swirled in the room, and slowly, an image came into focus. Children playing in a park. Laughing and screaming from joy. The image faded out to be replaced by a calm flower meadow. A few young adults lay peacefully among the daisies and posies, chatting and laughing as they cloud-watched. Soon enough, this image faded as well. A new picture of an office building appeared. One man tripped on the curb, he and his papers went sprawling all over the sidewalk. Instantly he was aided by everyone in the general vicinity. Rija opened her eyes, smiling greatly now. "This is what I dream. A world where people no longer have to worry about war, or fighting, or anything like that. They live their lives peacefully, and joyfully. But most of all, I want to be the one who made that happen. It's why I became a soldier in the first place." Rija spoke calmly. Soon, the office building to faded out. A new picture, of the room they were in now, Rija and Derik stood near each other, before Derik leaned down, and kissed her, full on the lips. The real Rija blushed, bright red. "I, uh, didn't mean to show that one." She said, a little timidly, as the last image of her dreams flew away.

Derik was aloss for words. He wassen't sure if he had just imagined the hole sceneario that just occoured. "I... I uh..." He sputtered, he was trying to think of something to say, but all he could do was stutter. "T-think of something before she thinks you're stupid, stupid!" He thought, the mist starting to turn into its cloud like form again. "I... I uhmm..." Derik was absolutely mindblown, his fingers turned quite cold, he felt like he was just watching the hole event from the third person. Derik's mind was almost blank, when the mist took his dreamscape. A simple log cabin appears first, it was in a scenic clearing, the grass and flowers surrounded the area as the dirt path lead off into the distance. His dream then changed, it turned into the inside if the house, it was wooden-boarded, two shadowy figures sit on a couch, a smaller one, like a child, and a older woman, likely the child's mother. They played games together, but then the child sprung up, and ran to a door over off on the other side of the room. The view changed again to Derik in a small, stone room, tools of many kinds sat all around, a smelting pot, chimney, and some supplies are available as well. Derik is working on what seems to be a silverware set when the child enters the room, she has dark blue hair and white skin, like snow. She jumps up into Derik's arms, and he cradles his child as the mother enters. Her appearance is fuzzy, but somewhat seems to resemble Rija. "I don't know what to feel... But... If you wanna... I'm willing to try..."

The eyes betray everything. From sincerity to indifference.

Sera placed a hand on Rodin's shoulder. "Hey. Dont do that. I'm just bad with guys. Came with me being a stripper." She patted his shoulder. "Take care of yourself Rodin. Got it? Besides." She grinned. "My last wishes always included both a boyfriend and girlfriend. Maybe you'll make the grade. Or be friendzoned. Don't know what to do anymore."

Letting go, she stepped closer to Vergyl. "How powerful is the long range laser cannon on Wing, and is it a dual buster type deal?"

(Thought for sure I left the thing as a thought, but I'll roll with it.)

Rodin thought:  Didn't see all of that coming either.  Then he says:  "Yeah, uh well, stuff like this doesn't usually happen.  But I never talked with girls for more than five minutes, so....  Anyway, you better make it back alive!  You hear me Seraphim?!  You have better make it back alive!"  Now talking to Vergyl, Rodin says:  "Sorry for bothering with you again Vergyl.  This will be the last time I ask.  Where is Laganns' hangar located at?"

"Well, you've talked to me for about ten minutes, so I think you're doing good." Sera teased.
