Is next gen tech gonna be wasted on overglorified cutscenes again?

Posted

As many have noticed even before I do,many of the AAA industry during the past gen LOVED to cinematize their games as much as possible with overglorified overdramatic cutscenes that shapes almost 70% if not 90% of many games we've played.

Developers like EA and some others are always singing the "Hardware power" song and how this new techonlogy will expand their games.....only to have those games be shorter in length than a Ps1 game with cutscenes that lasts for hours when you combine them....Someone tell me why I haven't found any game in the last gen that's  as big as some old classics from the past gens of gaming????

3rd parties were always...ALWAYS harping on the power of next gen since the Ps3Xbox 360 days, yet the manage to do either nothing spectacular or overhype a game, only to have the game sucks after all that hyping.

And even then,3rd parites never took advantage of the hardware power to expand their games at all with very few exceptions that can be counted on your hand. The others most likely to use it for either nice glorified graphics for their copy-paste FPS games,or make games with more than 10 hours of cutscenes.

The only video game that I've seen so far that screams next gen from third parties is Final Fantasy XV(and that was supposed to be a Ps3 game but bad management of Square screwed it up and was forced to be on Ps4) and maybe The Witchers 3

And that's it,So far only 1st party developers are using the power for their hardwares to expand their games in terms of gameplay.

Cutscenes doesn't equal high production value if the story sucked ass and the gameplay was boring as shit.

Again, there are exceptions to what I've been talking about and there are some good developers that make use of the hardware power to polish their gameplay, the AI,the level design....etc,but they're not as many as they were in previous gens

The video game industry is now becoming another Hollywood where we pay 60$ on a game, only to find that cutscenes makes 90% of that game(I'm looking at you FINAL FANTASY XIII and MGS4......I know MGS4 is a great game but holy shit some cutscenes last for a FULL HOUR if not hour and a half)

Fool. The last of Us was good.

I know I know. The Last of Us is good, but again it's one of those few exceptions

Fool. Dead Space. No cutscenes during the game.

But then Dead Space 3 came out and took away what Horror elements that was in the previous games

And again,that's just another exception

And I know you'll say another one but that doesn't change the fact that games with overglorified cinematics are all the rage among AAA developers

Dude I don't demand the absolute perfect game

I'm just saying that the current gaming industry are leaning toward impressive cinematics over gameplay

Just take Final Fantasy XIII,compare that to Final Fantasy IX or Chrono Trigger and tell me which one has more replay value, quality, imagination and effort out of the two

Im sorry times are changing and people like a touching, epic, cinematic story to go along with their game

Why care about the length of a game, when you could experience something amazing?

I've played a lot of games that are short in terms of gameplay, but are much better than longer games.  The longer games end up feeling repetitive enough for me to not play them anymore. (i.e. Skyrim)

Games like the titles that Naughty Dog has created have amazing characters that have plenty of details that we can easily relate to.

Dude are accusing me of something???

I never said I don't want cinematic stories,I'm all for that otherwise I wouldn't have loved the likes of Kingdom Hearts

But when you have a game like Final Fantasy XIII that is 90% cutscenes with linear as shit progress with no exploration whatsoever.Cinematics alone can't get you immersed in those world if you can't explore or talk to people

Video games are an interactive medium where interactinv with the enviroment should be mixed correctly with impressive cinematics, not have the whole game become a movie.

I'm sure you just read the title and posted without any second thought of what I said

I don't need you to tell me that time is changing because I'm 24 year old and I already know how much gaming has changed during those years.

Again,I don't mind a short game that succeed to immerse me in it's world, heck FF4 takes almost 15 or less hours to beat and I love it

But then you have a game like FF13 where the game is just setting on my ass watching the same talk about Fal'cieL'ciePulse over and over without to much activity to do

Did anyone of you guys read my post entirely or you just seen the title and came here to turn me down just like what happened with The Last Airbender thread I made where everyone called me a weeaboo

FFXIII kept my interest at least. It was good enough for me to actually play through a Final Fantasy for once. Next-gen, cinematics and gameplay will be on par in appearance, but neither will stand against the other. To be honest though, some of the best games have always been made up of cutscenes since the PSone.

What gurantees than next gen won't have the same past gen Dileema ???

As for Ps1 days, only few games had VA,and games like FFVII,while they had text cutscenes, they were brief and to the point

Again, try to understand what I said

I never said get rid of cutscenes entirely,I said have balance between cutscenes and gameplay where I play as much if not more than I watch

If I want a movie,I got watch a movie

Why watch a movie when you can be the movie?

Why watch a movie when you can be the movie?

You can be the movie if the game was interactive and I feel like I'm part of it's world that I can explore

whereas games like FFXIII sits you in front of the screen doing nothing most of the time except holding forward to reach the next cutscene

Well that's mainly because the gameplay for FFXIII is still focusing on some form of turn based combat rather than letting it be an open world action series.

XIII's combat wasn't turn-based since it's improved the ATB system to the point it became an action RPG.

And again, what combat will you have if you can't go discover new enemies on your own rather than having the game feeding you slowly or recycling them.

And speaking of Combat, everything in the game feels scripted thanks to the stupid crystarium in which you can't level up more until the games tell you to do so after each chapter

I honestly believe Final Fantasy games will do much better if they follow the footsteps of FFXV in terms of gameplay.

Same here

FFXV Gameplay looked Fantastic with every trailer since it's beginning under the Versus XIII name....a huge world to explore with potentially good story and the battle system is similar to KH

Yep, they're holding us back by sticking to a similar battle system to Turn-Based. The ATB combat felt like another form of turn-based combat, it just let you do more in one turn compared to Turn-based.Turn-based gameplay is a dying system in this generation and if Square wants their popular set of series to go on, they need to adapt and make it true action.I must say I've been keeping up with FFXV since its stages as Versus XIII and the moment I heard the Kingdom Hearts team was working on it, I knew this was gonna be a title to look forward to. Then I saw the first form of combat and instantly loved it. It just keeps getting better with every trailer released.

I agree the ATB system is just a more advanced type of turn-based combat but Square already tried non-turn-based combat in FFXII and that ended up being one of their least popular FF games.....Edit: or at least it seems that way to me because I'm the only person I know of in my family and group of friends that played it
