Probably a chemical reaction of sorts. I've seen chemicals reacting to one another in really weird ways, like foaming up or creating tentacles like that. Since that's what it looks like, that's what my guess is.

But I can believe that being a chemical reaction.

WHAT it is, I can't tell you. I can only tell that this animation clearly is moving backwards (from result back to how it started).

Looks like that 'something' is burning down.
