Square Enix Honcho Promises Flagship Titles Will Stay on PS4 and Xbox One; “Never Only on Smartphones”

Posted

Looking at Square Enix’s recent focus on mobile games, many worried about seeing even the publisher’s biggest franchises shift away from home consoles, but the new President Yosuke Masuda had reassuring words for us all today as part of an interview on Famitsu:

Our development in the country will never be devoted fully to smart devices. Flagship titles will continue to revolve around high end consoles like PS4 and Xbox One.

Our Japanese studios are working on Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, while we’re planning a sequel of Tomb Raider at our overseas studios. I think the DNA of Square Enix is in those story-driven single player games. On the other hand games sandbox games (games in which you can enjoy a vast open world), will continue to with the same style but featuring online gameplay.

Matsuda also mentioned that while he’ll keep those mainline titles on consoles, he wants to challenge new business models:

However, even in story-driven works I want to challenge new business models instead of just selling the package. I feel that the business of selling the boxes separately has become restrictive, and this kind of ingenuity and innovation has become necessary.

Finally, he commented about the PS4 and the Xbox One:

Both consoles are interesting, and they’re focusing a lot on the network. There has been an emphasis on free to play and developers that have become popular with free to play games on PC seem to be coming on board.

In other words it’s becoming possible to play on home consoles games that before you could only play on Steam. I believe that this can expand the userbase, and this will create new business opportunities even for us.

While I have to say that it’s a bit worrisome to hear Matsuda talk so much about free to play, and I hope that packaged games will remain part of the picture even on the long run (at least as an option), I can’t say I’m not happy to hear his commitment to home consoles. A world in which Square Enix releases game only on smartphones is a world I don’t want to live in.

Thanks to DualShockers.

Lol. Have they released a flagship title on iOS and Android yet? Nope. All they have done is make spin-off games and port the original games to them.

Maybe not yet,but they might do it in the future..........and I don't believe anything that Square say these days, they made lots of promises in the past only to deliver almost none of those promises or only few of them......sure they haven't reached Capcom's status of shittiness but they're up there

Lol. If you don't have faith in them that's your loss.

Wanna know why??

I used to be the biggest Square Enix fanboy ever since I've played Kingdom Hearts 2 up until the announcement of LRFFXIII

And aside from their handheld titles most of the big ones they've teased were colossal dissapointment like XIII and XIV

And even though their western games like Tomb RaiderHitman Absolution were ok,those are not the games that I expect from Square Enix

Not to mention some practices such as true ending DLC (Ok it's not a true ending but the details in it should've been in the game) and the insulting methods of microtransaction in FF All the bravest and their padding and dragging of the XIII saga that they could've finished in XIII-2 but instead they extended it to a trilogy

The absolute silence about FFXV(a.k.a Versus XIII) for SEVEN YEARS has killed my hype for the game...I'm gonna buy it anyway but I won't be as excited as I was before

The fact that like Capcom,so many of the creative minds that made Square what they are now has left the company to work elsewhere says a lot

Combine that with the questionable decision they've made up until now,I don't have many reasons to trust the credibility of Square Enix anymore

Sure I'll support the Kingdom Hearts series....but that's mostly it

XIV has become one of the greatest MMORPGs of all time, and it'll be the best of all time no doubt.

I loved XIII, the only thing people can say badly about it is how linear it is but that aside it's amazing.

All The Bravest is a spin-off game, you don't have to play it.

Have you even played XIII-2? It's story went so crazy and the ending....they had to make LIGHTNING RETURNS. It couldn't end like that. We needed more Lightning.

Versus XIII would have been released by now but they decided to change it to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2011.

Lol I can't believe you forgot how many times I told you that I'VE PLAYED XIII-2 AND EVEN GOT ALL THE DLC THAT THE GAME HAS ON PSN!!!

They could've ended it with XIII-2 with a final extra episode that could've been released on PSN instead of the stupid DLC that we've got(Reiqeum of the Goddess)

You purchased the costumes and weapons? Lol. Calm down mate.

I thought Requiem of the Goddess was great.

They could not have finished the story with one more episode. So much happened in the ending.

If you don't like the XIII series, I say you're missing out.

I love XIII-2 and it's actually one of my favorite FF games

I hate the original XIII

and I need to play LRFFXIII before I decide what my final verdict of the XIII trilogy will be

How do you hate XIII?

How is possible that you two argue to each other each time FFXIII is written on a sentence?.. T_T  Anyway, Welp if EA said it would change... i find more possibilities on Square Enix than them. T_T
