Well, I play a lot of games. I can fairly judge games, and I decided, hey, why not let everyone know my GOTY for 2013! So, what could it be...?
Bioshock Infinite.
Now allow me to say, I'm not TOO big on the Bioshock franchise. I played Bioshock 1 and 2, and listed them both off as "Good, but nothing special". Then I played Infinite.
So quickly, story time. I wanted to play Bioshock 1, which my brother was the only one in the family who owned it. He, of course, got Bioshock Infinite with Bioshock 1 on the disc. I asked to play Bioshock 1, and he said yes. He then later left with my mom and dad for some music fest, telling me not to play Infinite(For whatever reason). Naturally, I ignored him after curiosity hit me. I started playing Infinite at this point. I then proceeded to play it for 10 hours straight, the longest time I've ever spent with a game in one sitting. There are many factors that go into this.
Please note, I won't be spoiling the ending of the game or anything. Let me just say that's it's still beautiful(I can admit though, the ending isn't nearly as beautiful as the first Bioshock's ending).
The game focuses around the main character, Booker, as he sets off to the floating city of Columbia to find a certain girl, Elizabeth. He eventually finds her, and the two are then confronted with many events that set them off on a grand journey across Columbia, Earth, and even into alternate realities. The story is beautiful, with focus going to the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth. Their interactions are so realistic, and you constantly want to hear them spout dialogue, even if it's just a small quip or two.
The gameplay is also something to speak of. It's mostly the same as other Bioshock games, with a few changes. First, you can only hold two guns. While some people might have a problem with this, I could work around it. Second, you can initiate combat almost anywhere there are NPC's. Wanna kill an innocent bystander? Go ahead, but you'll get attacked by guards. Next, the battlefields are mostly widely-spread platforms, that you get to via the skyhook, which can be used for both melee combat and transportation, making it one of the more fun additions of the game. Finally, you have Elizabeth herself. She throws you items from time to time depending on what you're running low on. Running out of Vigors(Plasmids, or basically magic-based attacks), and Elizabeth will toss you some Salts, which restore the Vigor meter. Running low on Health? She'll toss you some Health-restoring stuff. She can even just find money from walking around. This doesn't happen too often, either. Also, Elizabeth can use another ability, opening tears. Tears create new stuff to interact with, including ammo, platforms, etc., allowing you to change things on the fly(Note, only one tear can be open at a time). As a whole, the gameplay in Infinite is spot on.
Finally, we come to the presentation, and boy is it amazing. While I don't care for graphics in games, they do look rather nice. More importantly, I'm talking about the game's atmosphere. Every NPC you can talk to has something interesting to say. The world of Columbia is just so amazing, and the Christian references following Bioshock 1 and 2 are executed great. You could spend hours alone just walking around, soaking in all the game has to offer.
Bioshock Infinite, with all the points listed above, definitely earns my spot for GOTY 2013. Please note, I haven't gotten around to the DLC for it yet, but I hear it's pretty good, and I'd still list this as GOTY even without it. So, you think that *insert game title here* should've been GOTY? Pleasant to hear someone has an opinion! Why not post it to this topic? Thank you, and come again!
