If anybody thinks that Nintendo should stop production of the Wii U needs to put down the fanboy juice

Featured Replies

I agree stopping production of the Wii U would be a massive mistake but Nintendo's home consoles do usually struggle in comparison to the PlayStation home consoles. Only two Nintendo home consoles have ever sold 50+ million, one of them was the NES and other cashed in on the cheap price due to Nintendo's tradition of being last gen in their hardware.

yea Nintendo did give birth to their biggest rival ever ( the PlayStation brand.) But Sora96, Nintendo's track record is two great compared to Sony's

they won 3 console wars and they have dominated the handheld market since it started

This 8th gen of consoles is going to be a really close race after the PS4 launches in Japan, they should be near or caught up with the Nintendo worldwide sales numbers ( estimated 4.3 million.)

The 8th gen will be a two horse race, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One broke records, the PlayStation 4 will be the clear winner with Xbox One in 2nd.

Sorablade- glad you do, I just can't wait till Nintendo shows what they are developing for the future, at E3 14

since I bought a Wii so late ( 2011) I will not buy a Wii U till 2015 or 2016 when I am done with my Wii.

Sora96- their are 3 horses in this race last time I checked, with Nintendo in 1st with a estimate of 4.3 million in sales, the PlayStation 4 has 2.1 million with the Xbox one with 2 million. that 4.3 million will not just disappear. but it will keep growing. By the time the PS4 catches up, the Wii U would have hit 5, 5.5m or 6 million by then

the only reason why people are saying it is a two horse race is because those people are the vocal gamers out of the three console brands .Me and you know it but Sony and Microsoft fanboys are the loudest and the most ignorant out of all the gamers.

Sony sold around 2.1 million from U.S and Europe, but for them to sell 2 million more in Japan ALONE these month would unrealistic ( like Nintendo claiming they will sell 9 million Wii Us by march)

There isn't only Sega for Nintendo . Nintendo has to cope with something called : "Playstation". To do that , Nintendo will have to expand its sales and of course don't stop producing Wii U and any other consoles . I am pretty sure though that it cannot reach the Playstation platforms .

The Wii U isn't selling, while the PlayStation 4 broke records with limited stock in some countries. Seriously there are countries where the PlayStation 4 has been released but there isn't any stock until February because it completely sold out in that country. And it hasn't even reached Japan yet. 2 million in Japan is unrealistic? They sold 1 million in Xbox heartland, the PlayStation 4 could sell that in Tokyo alone. I wouldn't put it past them.

if you guys are old enough to remember the Sega Saturn ( if you are not I suggest you should look it up) then you would know why it would be idiotic for Nintendo to stop production of the Wii U just because of a drought that lasted 8 months. That move would potential kill Nintendo and hurt their brand. Everybody would lose faith in Nintendo if they just gave up. Then they will end up like Sega. Speaking of Sega everybody needs to stop comparing Nintendo to Sega

Sega had 5 pieces of failed hardware or add-on in a row

Sega CD

Sega game gear

Sega nomad

Sega 32x

Sega Saturn

(Sega Dreamcast was ahead of its time and had a very successful launch.it just came out at the wrong time)

while Nintendo has had what like 8 pieces of hardware that were  successful

NES

SNES

N64

Wii

Gameboy

Gameboy Color

Gameboy advance

DS

and

3DS

( even through the N64 came in 2nd in the 5th gen, it still sold a great amount for it to be considered a success)

Now I want somebody to give me a valid reason why they will be going to end up like Sega when they have made tooooooooo much money from the 8 pieces of hardware I just mention. So stopping production of the Wii U might do more harm then good.

These are the word of wisdom right there.I love you

Even ReviewtechUSA said the same thing you've said now

Dropping the Wii U will be the worst mistake that Nintendo can ever make

  • Author

Master Keeper- you would be surprise with how many fanboys think that Nintendo should make a new console to replace the Wii U, just because they had a bad first year.

Metal Snake- I actually watched the ReviewtechUSA video , a couple months ago and he was telling the truth. Nintendo just giving up on their console was one of the many things that killed Sega, with the Dreamcast.

For starters, Reggie needs to be replaced for obvious reasons.

Sora96- yea it is not selling that well, and I don't see them hitting there 9 million goal in March, but the system is starting to pick up. This last holiday season helped Nintendo a lot with their sales. They have the ads( even if they are a little childish), they have the games, their install base is growing, and they had one system seller in 2013 with Super Mario 3D World, now they have two in 2014 ( Mario kart 8 and Super Smash bros.) . I don't see them having a problem, sales wise in 2014.

Not saying Sony can't sell 2 million in Japan ( they created the most successful console of all time), it just would be unrealistic to me. yea they did sell 1 million in U.S alone but where did they get the rest of that 2.1 million? From Europe and other countries, not just from one single country or area. So Japan is home of PlayStation, but for it to sell 2 million  in Japan would be unrealistic because they have less people then we do. The U.S has 314,000,000 million people living there, while Japan only has 180,000,000 million people. The most the PlayStation 4 sold in the U.S was 1 million. Japan has a less of a population then the U.S so for it to sell more then 2 million would not make sense to me IMO.

Not only is the population a factor, but also the pride of the Japanese people. Sony decided to release the PS4 in America, before Japan, the nation which Japan have been enemies for quite a long time. With how proudful the Japanese are, I wouldn't be surprise if they see this as treason, and so hurts the sales of the PS4, leaving only the sells of the hardcore fans and those who are interested of some of the little exclusives the consoles will have.

The console should take sometime to reach the 2 millions in Japan, if their pride was truly hurt. Though from March onwards and/or when every place gets fully stock and those who are waiting get the console, both Xbox One and PS4, will meet a slump in sells, since exclusives will be scarce, and the only thing that can help them is favoritism, fans and Japan, atleast till exclusives come, but if Sony is able to keep up a good amount of exclusives(something similar to what Nintendo does), the PS2 era should be back, and the PS4 will leave the other two far behind, followed by the WiiU, followed by the Xbox One.

Tlozbj-America and Japanese relationship have improved greatly since the second World War, but I get what you are saying. Some of the Japanese consumers might be a little mad about the fact that Sony launched the PS4 first in NA, but for it to slow down the sales that much sounds kind of dramatic to me. but they have a different culture then us ( America) so it could happen.

I agree with everything else you said, I actually want the 8 gen to be like the 6th gen ( when video games was at its best in my life) except I want it to be better competition and console race between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Sony dominated 6th gen destroying the completion. The downside to that was that third- party games were almost always made from the PS2 then ported to Xbox, GameCube and /or Dreamcast. not all of the ports were good. we the consumer, benefit from competition.

It is true their relationship have fixed a bit since then, but it can still be a problem. This "commercial" will also not help one bit, specially since this is more showing, how Sony favored other nations, instead of their homeland.

It should be a better race, where they will be head to head, every week, if they can have good exclusives, some of the biggest PS exclusives, have begun to go bi-platform or have died, with KH3 and the FF games, also going to the Xbox line, so that should settle things a bit, we also have the "death" of Crash and Spyro, Naughty Dog, killing and creating a new IP every generation, the slow downfall of GT, GTA have also become more equal for Xbox and PS, plus no longer haver backwards compability. Many of Sony's main assets have dissapeared or have gone in a more equal bi-platform manner, so all of this things that  made the 6th gen, a supreme victory for Sony, are pretty much gone now, so the competition should be more equal, even if all the games still do not go multi-platform.

You have to be insanely ignorant to count Nintendo out. They have so many good looking titles announced that are coming out this year and that isn't even counting what they have hidden for future Nintendo Directs (also isn't Zelda Wii U getting shown at E3? I'm pretty sure it is).

I like Playstation as much as the next person but Nintendo has been in the business for very long so they know what they are doing. The Wii U won't do Wii sales but then again I don't think the PS4 will do PS3 sales either, however I do think Nintendo is slowly doing what they did with 3DS with the Wii U and making it a must-have system where you can only get some of the best must-have games.

Wait a few more years before you go slamming Nintendo and saying this is just a two horse race between two of the biggest "bro's" in the gaming industry.

Producing a console that nobody is buying would cause a greater loss in profits than stopping production and moving onto something else or focusing on another product.

Basic business really.

I don't know Nintendo's details, but if the Wii U isn't making them enough money, they should stop. If it is making them money, then keep making Wii U's.

The problem with Nintendo's home consoles is they are underpowered. This has plagued them since the Gamecube. It's only hurting them now because the technology gap between the Nintendo and the others has gotten much wider. The Wii U has the power of the last generation of consoles, not the current generation. While Nintendo is ahead in handhelds they are so behind in consoles it's not even funny.

Nintendo has this elitist attitude that people will buy whatever they make no matter what because that's how it's always been. Things have changed. They have three major competitors that are stronger than ever and will only get stronger. The longer it takes for them to realize this, the higher chance they will wind up becoming playing card manufacturers again.

The PC is ahead of the PS4, the PS4 is ahead of the Xbox One, and all three are currently annihilating the Wii U.

Nintendo needs to adapt. The days where they could top the charts making the updated versions of the same games with the same characters and same stories is long since passed. When even Mario, the mascot of gaming himself is having trouble competing with other titles, you know something is wrong.

I don't want Nintendo to conform, I don't want to see them do what everyone else is doing even if it sells. I want to see them take a risky idea and change the entire industry with it. That's what Nintendo does. That's why I love Nintendo. When it comes to creativity and innovation, Nintendo is the best by far. They just need to take advantage of it.

Amon- I game on all three consoles and both handhelds so I am not a Nintendo fanboy, but what most of the things that you are saying is wrong about Nintendo ( no offense).

1.The NES,SNES ,Wii, had weaker hardware then its competitors, and they also beat their competitors in their console race( NES won 3rd, SNES, won 4th, and the Wii won the 7th gen). Nintendo does not need the most powerful console to be successful.

2.Nintendo's problem never was the fact that they had weaker hardware. Their problem with the Wii U was its sells, install base, and its lack of games ( the same drought that the PS4 and Xbox One is about to face after march)

3.All business have/ had a elitist attitude. Remember Microsoft when they had their DRM, or Sony with launching the PS3 at $500 and $600. They all get cocky when they are winning.

4. Define ahead because tech wise the Wii U is weaker then PS4 and Xbox One ( not a big difference through, not like the Wii vs. the Xbox 360 and PS3 ) and the 3DS is weaker then the PS Vita. Now sales wise the 3DS is ahead of the Vita ( with 34.98 million) and the Wii U is ahead of the PS4 and Xbox One ( it has 4.3 million sales)

5.Sales wise no eighth gen console is annihilating the Wii U, the PlayStation 4 has only sold 2.1 million units world wide with the Xbox One at 2 million worldwide. I will gave them the benefit of the doubt since they have not launched in Japan yet.

6.Nintendo has the money to keep supporting the Wii U until the 9th gen of consoles come out (2019-2021). Even if the console/handheld is failing they still have to support it until it is done or its reputation will be in jeopardy. What if Sony stopped production of the PS3 when it was not selling? then their reputation would have gotten wounded and consumers would not have that much faith in Sony. The thing that killed Sega was the fact that consumers lacked faith in Sega Dreamcact after their failures of their past hardware. Reputation is just as important as profit.

7.Nintendo has already adapt. They have new IPs for the Wii U and 3DS, With almost every console generation, they come up with a new way to game. Nintendo innovates way more and way better then their competitors.

Yes, but the case is that even if they are doing a smart move, they are still missing something, they are treating their people as 2nd tier consumers, which will hurt their sells, the same way that the Xbox releasing first in places other than America, will hurt it sells. But anyway, we can't really count on the PS4 launch to be magnificent in Japan. The PS3, didn't even got to 100,000 on its launch. the PS4, having a more western approach, than compared to the PS3 released, should sell about the same, maybe a bit more, but we cannot expect something big of the launch, the only reason Sony has Japan on the palm of their hands, is because of 3rd parties, if the N64 incident had never happened, they would had never have such a strong grip in  Japan, since 3rd parties would still be creating games for Nintendo Consoles, so Nintendo would had been the one with the JRPGs, big Dynasty Warriors titles, more Monster Hunter, etc, while Sony would probably be today in the position that Nintendo is, or even worse since their focus is western gamers, receiving badly done ports, being ignored, etc.

Them not releasing in Japan, first, will only hurt them, be it on release or in the long run. They have treated their homeland as 2nd tier consumers, they are releasing with mainly western titles and "hardcore", the only Japanese oriented titles, being mainly ports. the "casuals" seems to have a stronger hold in Japan than the "hardcore" gamers, and the console market has shrinked in Japan. The destiny of the launch and life of the PS4 in Japan, is in a gigantic limbo.
