Nintendo Confirms To Be Making Apps For Phones

Posted

Nintendo has confirmed it will soon be releasing content for mobile phones. And games could be part of it.

Japanese news outlet Nikkei first reported the news that Nintendo would produce smartphone content earlier this week, which Nintendo partially denied. Turns out they were both kinda right.

At a business presentation in Tokyo today, President Satoru Iwata has announced Nintendo's first real step towards smartphone development, talking about an app that could showcase "the value of our entertainment offerings, thus encouraging more people to participate in Nintendo platforms."

It's mostly apps about advertising their platforms, but bigger chance is they'll be making games for phones too, which can do a lot of good things for Nintendo.

I read where it was made clear Nintendo games are not coming to mobile devices or 3rd party platforms, and there are no plans for it at all.

My guess (I don't know if there already is one) is they will look at an app that coincides with Nintendo's console online network (don't know what is called) like the PSApp and Smartglass.

The point was that it's a possibility for the future. Right now, Iwata doesn't want to make games for mobile devices, but an app for Nintendo Network is something to start with.

What people don't seem to understand is that one of the worst things Nintendo could do right now is to start putting Nintendo games on other platforms. After all, the main reason people but Nintendo consoles in the first place it to play Nintendo games. Or at least, that's my theory.

The idea of using smartphones for advertising is pretty interesting. As long as they don't start making a ton of games for them, I'm fine with this. (I hate trying to play games on a smartphone, having the controls on-screen feels too messy.)

From what I read, they didn't plan that, but Iwata did give the team in charge of this permission to use the characters in a game if they want.

I'm expecting them to make apps that tie into their existing services. Things like a Miiverse app or some such. Nintendo Direct for your phone.

But I very much doubt they'll be making games purely for mobile devices.
