One of my favorite moments in Final Fantasy (FFVI SPOILERS)

Posted

I've been thinking about FFVI a lot lately. I just thought back to a certain scene, and I just felt like saying my personal thoughts on it... Because why not?

Anyway, I'm talking about what happens after Kefka "destroys" the world. When Celes wakes up on that island, and finds a sick Cid. I'd heard that Cid could either live or die depending on what you do at this point. I wanted to save him. I really did. I spent what felt like hours catching fish, and feeding the bed-ridden man. I didn't care that he was once my enemy, I didn't want him to go. I felt how Celes felt. It was probably only 20 minutes, but it felt like an eternity... When I realized I was getting nowhere... I had to stop, so I did... I had to watch Cid die... I almost cried when Celes climbed the cliff, and found the sign at the top. When she jumped off... It was probably one of the most dark and emotional scenes I've ever seen. It's very rare that a game makes me feel how I did at that time. Games try so hard to put the player in the protagonist's position, to make them feel how they feel... FFVI is one of the very few times I ever remember that happening to me.

It's moments like that that make me love these old-school RPGs. Even with their limitations, they did a way better job with immersion than most modern games I've played today. This moment was probably one of the most well-written scenes I've ever experienced in a game, just because of the emotional depth of it all. I really wish that more games these days had the same quality as FFVI...

the only two I summoned were Raiden and Bahamut...Raiden so grinding will go much faster if he got a Zantetsuken on every enemy, and Bahamut's Mega Flare deals a good damage

the Magiciteespers are pretty much like the materia from FF7....once you learn all powerful spells you won't be using Magicites or summon materia that much

Pretty much. : Spells were a lot more useful. Now that I think about it, I don't use summons too often in FF games, aside from FFX and After Years. They just take up a lot of MP, and by the end of the game, ordinary spells do more damage.

Oh, gosh, I hate Gau's dad, too.  I always thought he was a bit of a kook, but after discovering he was Gau's dad and his later response to his son, well, I just disliked him all the more.  There's some interesting scenes between him and Gau, though, when Sabin takes him to see his dad at one point.

As for the scene that you mentioned, Yellow Flash: I just loved it as well.  It was dark, depressing, emotional, and moving; it's rare to find such a moment in video games, especially modern ones.  I was entirely able to connect with the character and her feelings, which is surprising since FF6 is one of those games that lacks voice acting and top-notch graphics.  I guess this goes to show that games can be quality even without quality graphics and sound.  Although I could hardly say that the sound wasn't quality; the music was sensational.

Did anyone else enjoy the opera house? : D

Agreed, I find it amazing that they could put that much emotion into a game that was so limited when it came to the hardware. Square's games from the SNES era were spectacular, even with those technological shortcomings. And yeah, FFVI's soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites. It's funny how the sounds from a 16-bit game were better (in my opinion) than a lot of orchestrated soundtracks.

I liked the opera scene, but I don't quite think it was as good as a lot of other people say.

Maria & Draco is the best moment in FFVI.

heres the scrapped part involving Strago & Shadow.

Strago: I have one request... Show me your face. Even if you are him, I have no intention of wasting time trying to talk you into staying. I just want to know... for Relm's sake...

Shadow: ...... (He takes off his mask and shows Strago his face. However, his back is turned so that the player can't see.)

Strago: Thank you... Shadow. ...Come, let's have a drink.

I really loved the Opera House...more specifically Celes's song
