Something that I will never understand about voice acting in Shonen anime dubs

Posted

Both in Japanese and English,I don't get the backward logic of either giving a young character(mainly the male ones) a voice way older than he is(Edward in the dub of FMA is voiced by the same dude who voiced Broly...I'm not kidding) or give an old character a voice way younger than he actually is(I can't stand Goku's Japanese voice I hate it)

Is it really that hard to either find a young actor to voice the 10 to 15 years old character or at least let a female character voice them?

Like how Gohan during his youthteenagehood was voiced by a female

Heck Allen Walker in the Japanese dub of D.Gray Man was voiced by a female but in a voice tone that fit with the fact that he's 15 years old?

It's really really jarring when you see a 12 to 15 year old characters sounding like a muscular 26+ year old man.

Both Japanese and English dubs are guilty of this, sure some animes got it right, but most others didn't bother to hire another actor either because some are lazy to do so or wanna save budget.

Well the same problem also applies to most Japanese video games(Hope's Japanese voice in FFXIII baffles me,Hope is 14 yet he sounds like he's in his mid 20s)But it's mostly noticable in anime

Some aren't as bad (Naruto and One Piece have dubs that seem pretty accurate, at least to me), but yeah, some are really weird. Goku's Japanese voice throws me off, it's a little TOO high pitched. xD

Well Naruto and Luffy sound fine and their voices fit their age,but just listen to Edward's English voice in Full Metal Alchemist,it's really jarring especially coming from the fact that the dude who voiced FREAKIN BROLY also voiced him

Speaking of Goku's voice,do you know that the woman who voiced Goku in the Japanese dub kept on voicing him ever since the 80's debut of the original DB aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way to the latest episode of DBZ Kai?

Fool. For Dragon Ball, young Goku had a female voice actor, which is normal. But for Dragon Ball Z, they didn't think about changing the voice actor, so he was stuck with a female voice actor.

Ed's voice honestly doesn't bother me too much. I know he did Broly, but he's got a good enough vocal range to be able to sound like a teenager, too. He also did young Obito, who sounded fine in my opinion.

I know, actually, not only Goku, but also Gohan and Goten were voiced by the same woman

Fool. Then what's with the confusion?

Well I can think of another example then,Allen Walker's English voice in D.Gray Man...it's way more jarring especially if you watched the Japanese dub

I haven't seen D. Gray Man, so I can't really say anything about that one. : I'll take your word for it though. xD

My confusion is not about Goku,I mean in the anime industry in general. Some studios don't even bother to bring a young actor or a female to voice young characters, which ends up with a 12 year old sounding like a 26+ year old man

Sure some wanna avoid the whole child actor thing but they can hire a female

Fool. Maybe someone like that doesn't come in to the audition, or some who does fit the part just isn't good at voice acting.  They have to make decisions.

There are tons of actors in each studio heck sometimes one actor plays multiple characters,it won't hurt that much if one actor voiced two characters,it happened a lot both in the gaming industry and anime industry.Example:Jason Griffith used to voice both Sonic and Shadow at the same time before they hired someone else

Fool. Multiple characters being played by a single person is an example of  low amount of choices. Most animes are very cheaply made and they will do anything to lower costs. Dragon Ball Z is an example of a very cheap anime.

if this was the 90's and 80's that would've been accepted but nowadays animes are made with a high production value most of which goes toward polishing the animations (Just look at Attack on Titan and recent Hunter X Hunter episodes) so I don't think a couple of dollarsyens invested towards a good voice cast would hurt in fact it'll boost the quality even further

Not every girl can do a teenage boy voice, they have to have a large voice range :P

When did I say every girl? That's why auditions exist,to see which voice will fit the character

That and Vegeta's orgasm-inducing English voice are the only reason I watch the English dub.

Pretty much, though do you mean the Ocean Dub or Funimation?

Either. I love both. Ocean's for being hilariously awful and Funimation's for being better.

Well, in my contry they did Dragon Ball with only 7 voice actors for EVERY CHARACTER (male/female), and it was a really good dub.

The thing is that sometimes the voice actors are chosen just because they did very good jobs in others animes or movies, presuming that they will do the same ( or because they are famous in some TV shows, etc.). But sometimes that just doesn't work well :/
