I was wondering if it was worth it to trade in a Wii for a Wii U? I know I won't get much for it but my mom wants to do something with it and she wants a wii u to play the new mario game. We also want one to play mario kart 8.

I'd say so. I support and anticipate Wii/Gamecube HD remasters for WiiU much like Wind Waker.

Totally, so long as you have the ability to pay off the rest of its price.

Not really, if you have GameCube games. If not, maybe, but I wouldn't go to gamestop. I sold them back a basically brand new DSi and got 20 bucks for it, your not gonna get much better for a Wii

Depends. Do you have Gamecube games? Do you have a Gamecube to play those Gamecube games on? The Wii U can't play Gamecube games at the moment, so you would be unable to play those. Also, if you have any downloaded games on your Wii, you would be unable to transfer them to the Wii U if you sold the Wii. If you don't care about those two things, I'd definitely recommend it. Of course, trading in a Wii won't get you nearly enough to get a Wii U.

You're only going to get $30 back, not to mention the games that will potentially be unplayable on the WiiU.  I would suggest perhaps keeping it for a younger sibling/relative or see if you can make more selling it on craigslist or something.

If you trade in anything to gamestop, even if there's supposedly a "deal" going on, you're getting robbed.

Try ebay if you have the patience.

Title edit makes it sound like the Wii U is just an upgrade. Common mistake...

Yeah I just want it because I want to play the games that are on it

He meant that you're making it sound like the Wii U is just an add-on to the Wii, and not an entirely new console. A lot of people make that misconception, and it can get frustrating for those of us with a Wii U and who want to support it.

Yeah, didn't realize it was a mod who changed it. Sorry about that.
