Who's your favourite video game director?

Posted

Mine used to be Tetsuya Nomura (he's still my favourite character designer), but now it's Motomu Toriyama.

Please, in that amount time they better be the greatest video games ever thought of.

Either Katsura Hashino or Kitase. I like Nomura but he thinks too hard. For example, he thinks he has to create a story element to justify Sora starting at level 1 every time. He shouldn't have to. We as gamers should know that's just how mechanics work.

He doesn't mean starting over at level one, he means being "weak" again (not having your full moveset from the end of the last game). There needs to be some reason for this. Some Western games acknowledge or explain this as well, for instance in God of War 2 Kratos' lack of powers is explained well.

It was Trollsuya Nomura until he became such a troll. Probably now it would be... I don't really know.

Edit: Probably Katsura Hashino, the director of Persona 3 and 4.

Same thing. No there doesn't. Sora's moveset is purely mechanical. We see nothing of these types of moves/abilities in actual cutscenes so Nomura shouldn't have to explain anything.

Masahiro Sakurai or Hiroyuki Ito.

I can't decide between them as both are great.

Testuya Nomura of course and David Cage for Beyond: Two Souls game and KARA video thingy!

Hopefully for this game we start strong and only get stronger, so we can avoid this problem. I honestly can't think of a game where a character grows in strength, then the next game he starts weak again. I guess The Legend of Zelda or something, but in those games they are different protagonists. If you import characters from Mass Effect 1 to 2 you gain experience which can be used to get abilities, etc. But in that series the abilities are due to technology, not skills that the person naturally or magically gains like Sora or Kratos. Sora losing all his Keychains doesn't need to be explained (we all lose our keys sometimes) but him becoming incompetent at fighting is something which needs explanation imo.

If you could list some games where stories happen chronologically, with the same protagonists, and their powers are gimped with no explanation that would be appreciated.

Probably Masahiro Sakurai. I've really liked most of the games he's made (Smash Bros is one of my favorite game franchises ever, and Kirby's up there too. I'm kinda eh towards Kid Icarus Uprising solely because of the atrocious control scheme). He's really dedicated towards his work, and actually really cares about the fans, too.

Also, Shigeru Miyamoto. The guy's a genius.
