I just don't like how apes are kept in enclosures

Posted

Like seriously, they just need to be set out into the wild. They have levels of self awareness, and can be concerned about their futures. Orangutans have the intelligence of human children for f*cks sake.

I guess I'm only bringing this up because when I went to the Seattle zoo earlier this summer I could see how sad the orangutans were. They don't like being stared at for their whole lives, just like people. And you could see that. The babies were staring at the glass with a fearful look in their eyes and they were trying to cover up their faces :(

I just don't think it's right.

The alternative is Planet of the Apes

It's either them or us, as humans are unwilling to share their place at the top of the food chain

The ones who have been locked up their entire lives have lost their connection to the wild. Animal Rights Groups would have disease carrying animals freed from animal testing facilities and have all the animals set free from enclosures....and we'd have a disaster on our hands.

I understand what you're saying....but think about it....they wouldn't be able to survive.

Fool. What about dolphins? They are way smarter than apes.

Not really....

Not really....

Fool. Yeah really.

They're intelligent, sure, but apes are the most intelligent animals period. Like the fact is many Bonobos and Gorillas have developed a pretty large vocabulary of sign language. Orangutans are as smart as human children and have been accomplished artists. Even Chimps are smarter than dolphins.

Not to mention humans are apes as well.

Also dolphins aren't endangered in the wild. They're pretty protected.

You might want to think carefully about that. There are many primates that are kept in testing labs for research on medication side effects and disease progression just to name a few. Do you really want them released into the wild, where they are free to infect other, possibly natural animals with this now artificial disease or chemical concoction? Bad idea.

I just mean the ones in zoo's where they're stared at all day.

Fool. Humans aren't apes, what are you talking about? Neither are Bonobos, Gorillas, or Orangutans. They're separate species. Dolphins have a vocabulary as well. Apes, and other primates other than humans, also never get a sense of outside awareness. That's the realization that living things other than themselves also have their own minds. They just don't get it. Dolphins do, however.

You obviously haven't looked into apes that much. They are so cognitively similar to humans. They don't like being in cages, they can be concerned about their futures.

Fool. Three out of your four links aren't even about apes. Cognitively similar is not a measure of how closely intelligent they are to us. They just work in a similar way, but not nearly as advanced. They dislike cages and can be concerned about their futures, but they still can never be more mentally mature than a five year old. And they still aren't aware that other beings can have consciousness.

And if you want to be taken seriously, don't use wikipedia.

Lol better than taking your ass seriously

Fool. My mistake, they are apes. Everything I said still stands, though, except for humans. But this topic isn't about humans.

Well I mean not even the human brain is fully understood right now so I guess other animals intelligence is still debatable.

Fool. Even so, it is very apparent that dolphins are more intelligent.

Really only bottlenosed dolphins and even then I wouldn't say they're as smart as orangutans.

how long ago? i work at the Zoo in seattle

Well I mean not even the human brain is fully understood right now so I guess other animals intelligence is still debatable.

The human brain is already understood [for the most part in terms of physical mapping and structuring]. The main thing that isn't understood is the fundamental mechanics of how it works [like what defines 'emotions', 'consciousness', 'soul', how a string of electrical signals via neural pathways create memories, etc.] Human intelligence is also debatable because defining it is very shaky grounds.

Nothing wrong with Wikipedia. 95% of what is on there is reliable. Even my lecturers at University recommend it as a decent starting point for research.

On topic: apes and dolphins are both cognitively advanced. They can both recognize themselves in mirrors, so they at least have a sense of self. It's hard to compare intelligence between species and even between humans can be difficult. Apes can communicate more easily through body language, so their spoken language might not be as advanced as dolphins. Apes are similar to humans so it's easier to identify human traits but dolphins could be more intelligent.

Dolphins may be protected, but they are endangered. This images can be really hard to look at, so if you don't want to, don't open the spoiler.

Oh is that why there was an episode of South Park were the Japanese would constantly slaughter dolphins?

Probably. They eat a lot of dolphins in japan.
