A recent statement from Square Enix's Darrell Gallagher has revealed that Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox 360 will not be developed by Crystal Dynamics.

Instead, studio Nixxes Software will handle development of the sequel for the last-gen platform.

"We're wholly focused on Rise being an Xbox One title without limitation, without even thinking of the Xbox 360 version," Gallagher told Game Informer in their Rise of the Tomb Raider-themed March issue. According to Gallagher, Nixxes proved they could handle development by impressing the team enough to pass development over.

"Nixxes put together a tech demo of Rise of the Raider content running on Xbox 360, and we were totally blown away by what they achieved," he said.

It's because of the large install base of the Xbox 360 that Square Enix has decided to release a last-gen version of Lara Croft's next adventure, and Gallagher claims that Nixxes' work will not in any way limit Crystal Dynamics as they work on the Xbox One version.

Fantastic news as this means the new gen version will not be held back by old hardware.

Thanks to IGN.

So I assume it will be something like The Force Unleashed?

Does that mean that when they make a PS4 version they will also make a PS3 one?

Yeah. Maybe.

They shouldn't even worry about the 360 or PS3. I'm not gonna complain though since they got someone else to do that for them.

I agree. The big budget games should be exclusive to new gen and PC now.

why would they willingly limit themselves to an audience of about 25 million when combined the PS3 and 360 have an audience of nearly 200 million

165 million actually. And even then a lot of those would have been returned, haha. And then look at all the PS3 & 360 ports last year, half of them were crap.

"a lot" probably doesn't equate to 140 million

games are getting more expensive to make, the XB1 and even the PS4 haven't sold enough to make reliable returns on high budget projects yet

Sales say otherwise.

Just to list a few: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Little Big Planet 3, the few sports games I'm aware of.

All of which had poorly made, bug ridden ports on the PS3 and 360.

Shadow of Mordor was even worse despite being delayed. Lol.

Whose sales? It's not like we really have many specific stats to go by

the quality of the port hasn't ever been a big factor. Most PS3 ports of 360 games are awful, but people eat them up because it's what they can get their hands on

Almost forgot about it. It was that bad too. Like it's frames dropped soooo bad that even the audio would cut out on it.

You're just saying this because you don't own a new gen system yet. Lol.

...yeah I do

but I have a powerful PC anyways, so that doesn't really matter, I'd rather play a game at max settings than 720p unstable 30 fps
