Thanks. ^^The career options are exactly what's worrying me... I have no problem doing the masters, but I'd really rather not become a therapist, and I'm not sure how many other options there are. :DEnglish would be a safer opption, and I love it about as much as psychology.

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this, but I would strongly recommend researching career opportunities for both English and Psychology majors, specifically in your region.  Like you mentioned, a Bachelors with a focus in English might be regarded as safer; particularly in relation to education.  Whereas with something like Psychology (like Queen Tery already said), in order to most likely secure a career genuinely related to psychology (defined as the scientific study of the human mind and behaviora Masters would go a long way. Whatever you choose to do, good luck doing it!

I'm halfway through my last year of high school, so I'll be attending college in the fall. Not sure where, though. I've been accepted to around 5 or so schools (I applied to a lot because tbh I don't know what I want), and I'm waiting for a decision from 3 more (though I've already decided that I won't be attending one of them).

I'm planning to go into Computer Science as well. :D (I'll also be doing Creative Writing as a minor, just because I like it.)

I've been given some scholarship money from all the schools I've been accepted to so far, but most of 'em are still rather expensive. I'm pretty much screwed on that front, unless I get more than I think I will from Financial Aid. :/

Awesome! I actually started out majoring in Electrical Engineering but after taking that intro to engineering course I feel like I'd enjoy working more with computers than actually being a full on "engineer." If money is a problem, refer to my previous response to Winner's Proof. Also, community college is an option. Transferring to a four year university after 2 years at community college saves you money and opens you up to scholarships that may only be available to transfer students^^ Though, if you choose that route make sure you have a 4 year university in mind and that you work with both colleges to make sure you're taking classes that WILL transfer.

Make sure you keep putting your best "foot" forward xP

So many feet jokes... it gets old, people! xD

Thanks. :)

Peace!

Alrighty, I have to turn in a paragraph about what topic I plan to write about for a 4 to 6 page research paper that will be due toward the end of the semester, in a couple days here. The research paper is supposed to be argumentative. It's for Western Civilization which I don't know a whole lot about. Anyone have any ideas on a topic I could write about?

I dread it, so far the only goal I completed was that I am now a permanent hire at my current job  and no longer a temporary hire so I don't have to job hunt for a while.

This is a dumb question, but could you define "Western Civilization" in this context?

Not a dumb question at all based on what I've learned in the class so far lol Western Civilization in today's terms usually refers to any economy that is capitalist. But throughout most of time and in college and high school western civilization courses, it's about any culture that derives it's roots from European culture. Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, to name a few.

I'm currently studying accounting/finance at university. I live in England where we don't do the major/minor system. The course is pretty fun I guess.

Accounting is a pretty good field. I assume you're good at math lol

It was definitely one of my strongest subjects in school but not good enough for me to study say, pure maths or physics. Some of my friends are physics students and the calculations they have to perform look terrifying lol

I'm pretty good at math as well. I took Calculus in High school and got like a 96 or something like that. It's been 5 years since then though and I've forgotten a lot of it xD But I know what you mean lol In my intro to engineering class we dabbled into some basic engineering math and it was... daunting hahaha

Fellow computer science major here.  I'm almost done with it too.  I only have one class this semester as it's the only one I need to graduate, and after that... I'm not really sure.  I need to get a job near Chicagoland first.  Eventually I would like to be in the bay area, but first I have to become more independent and get a high enough salary to offset the high cost of living.

Well I suppose if a high salary is what you need, Computer Science is the major to go :P Especially considering the expected job openings in the present and future. Good luck on your last class and would you have any advice for me? I'm only on my second semester and I haven't even started a single computer science course yet. My first one is probably going to be about Java Programming.

Guys, I am so lost right now.

I'll be finishing high school soon, extremely soon, and I'll have to go to college eventually,But I don't know what course to take!! and it's really bothering me. In class it seems like all of my classmates have already signed up for a scholarship to this school and that school and there I was doing nothing. nothing. I could've done the same at the time but I believed that I needed to know what course to take before I look for a college, that way looking for the right college would be easier! :D I'm not worrying about scholarship applications since lots of school are still accepting.

I've been thinking what to take since sophomore year of high school...

At first I was very passionate about cooking so I thought 'why not Culinary Arts?' so in my earlier years in high school I joined the culinary club, that didn't go so dandy for me and eventually my interest died out.

I took an interest for Psychology so I asked one of my teachers what it was like (he studied 3 years) he told me if one was not mentally and emotionally stable it could prove difficult for them. cross out Psychology.

I like to act. I could try acting and it seems I'm very good at it, Theater Arts maybe? but what do I do after that? Ughhh...

My parents have been very patient with me and I extremely appreciate that but recently my dad has dropped the 'So, what do you want to be?' question. My parents suggested that I help my Aunts with their business, and it has something to do with agriculture and livestock. If I push through with it I instantly have a job immediately after graduating and I don't have to worry about anything else. The problem is, I just don't see myself doing that.

I took a deep breathe and thought about what are the things that I love and would love to do? Video Games. I'd like to learn more about video games, animation, and how to make them. I'm really considering taking Gaming and Animation technology. I believe you should pursue a career in something you love, but I'm still afraid there's still a lot going through my head, a lot of 'What if's' 'Maybe's' and uncertainties. I don't want to end up regretting my decisions. so help? please?

What are you taking up now? and why?

Scholarships are a little weird in that depending on your region (of the world, country, etc) you could qualify for a number of different scholarships.  For example my state (in the USA) offers a decent scholarship for those that meet the qualifications (GPA, number of credit hours, etc.).  However, that scholarship may not be available in other states.  I honestly wouldn't know, I haven't researched it.  And on that note...

Research is (in my opinion) an extremely important part of the entire college process.  I'm about 30% through and I wish I would've researched more about tuition, scholarships, majors, job opportunities in my region, etc.  If you have a trusted high school adviser/counselor I would recommend talking to them about these things.  If you haven't already, you should consider at least 3 colleges that would be viable options for you.  Once you've got those options in mind, research them!  Do a cost benefit analysis for each one - including things like tuition, transportation, available majors.  One of the worst things to do is to develop a concrete idea of a major you want to pursue, only to realize the college you would be attending doesn't offer the major.

At the end of the day, you know yourself and your own situation better than anyone else.  Keep that in mind when researching.

Also remember this is just based on my college experience, which may or not may be accurate compared to others.

I know how you feel. It's not easy to know what you want to do straight out of high school. If your parents are being understanding, is taking a year or 2 off after high school an option? As long as you use that time to gain some life experience and figure out what you want to do, I'd see that as being your best bet. Another good idea is to take the things you're interested in and see about any opportunity for job shadowing, internships, or entry level no college education jobs or classes, etc, in order to see if it truly is something you'd enjoy. I know not too many college degree requiring jobs have ways of checking out what they're like beforehand, but there are ways around it. Say you wanted to go to pharmacy school. Work as a technician to get a feel for what it's like to work in a pharmacy. Say you want to be a teacher. Talk to the teachers at your school and see if they can give you advice or even let you sit in on a class and have them explain the actual job and work behind the things they are doing. Say you wanted to get into computers, get a job at Best Buy's geek squad and just get a feel for computers. These are just examples and do not necessarily reflect your personal interests. Maybe working at your aunt's business might be a good idea like you said. Maybe you'd enjoy a career in business and that could help you realize that.

I'm personally a computer science major. When I got out of high school I didn't know what I wanted to do. My parent's were pushing me to go and at the time I figured it was better to just go along with it and not put much thought into it. I didn't know much about computers but I picked up on them quickly, so I figured I'd do something with that. 2 semesters in and I didn't take school seriously at all and my grades plummeted horribly. Had a few years off and now I have a family, so I needed to figure something out. First I looked into the military(keep that in mind, not sure if it's an option for you but the military has great benefits, pay's decent, great retirement, and they'll pay for your school afterwards if that's something you want) and decided it wasn't for me. Looked into going to school to be a biomedical equipment technician. Thought it sounded kinda interesting. After a while of researching, my interest went down as the pay wasn't amazing and it sounded a bit stressful, without much room to grow. Looked into biomedical engineering but lost interest after a while of research and couldn't find a school within commuting distance. Then I finally decided on electrical engineering and started at my local community college. I took an intro to engineering course and decided I didn't think I'd be interested in it. Then I decided I felt really compelled to give computer science a shot. I haven't really felt my interest go down yet, but we'll see. As of right now, I say really listen to whatever your first instinct is. Or at least give it a shot. Cuz 5 years ago, I said maybe computers. And here I am 5 years later and I still say... hey maybe computers.

Alright, I already have colleges I want to look into and I don't have to worry about transportation :D well, I have a pretty good GPA but let's cross that bridge when we get there. That's exactly what I'm being cautious about and why I didn't look for schools yet when everyone in class was.

Yeah, you're right and I figured stressing about it won't do me any good.

I'll keep that in mind, Thanks!

1 or 2 years off? I could do that but I'm considering not to since we have 4-5 months of summer vacation before going to college, during that time I'm gonna do a little exploring and hopefully figure out what I want to be but If I don't I'll talk to my parents about taking 1 year off. Hmmm.. I could always spend a week or two with my Aunt's to see if I'm up to it. I'll give it a shot.

Wow you've been through a lot, Life? what am I going to do with you? :'D I realize there are all kinds of benefits you receive when you join the military, but ain't no way am I joining the military noooo.

Right now my instincts are super quiet but whenever it chooses to speak I'll listen.

Thank you so much for giving me advice.

I would really follow where your passion lies and go with that.  If you enjoy your future job it won't feel like work, whereas if it's something you dread doing you will be dreading each and every day, no matter how much money you're making.  To be honest a lot of college freshmen don't know what they want to major in when they first start.  I know that I didn't and, to be honest, I still am uncertain.  It's pretty normal not to be sure on what you want to be, as there's so many options out there, and chances are you'll find yourself fond of an entirely different area once you get into classes.  I would advise to start by signing up with the basics.  Most associate and bachelor degrees require the same basics, so you can choose later what you want to go into after those initial 40-something credit hours.  Don't worry, you'll get through it, and I'm sure you'll find the path being clearer once you get your foot in the door and begin taking courses.  I wish you the best of luck!

I believe you should pursue a career in something you love, but I'm still afraid there's still a lot going through my head, a lot of 'What if's' 'Maybe's' and uncertainties. I don't want to end up regretting my decisions. so help? please?

What are you taking up now? and why?

The good news is you don't have to decide right away.  No matter what school you go to you'll have to take gen eds like English, Math, Science etc.  I see a few choices you can take form here:

  • You can go to a two year community college and get your gen eds done.  This will give you another two years to decide what you want to do.  If you chose this option, I highly recommend you get your associates degree.  My school automatically let me in because I got mine.  Also, while at CC you can take different courses to figure out what you want to do.
  • Given that you like video games and such, you could go into computer science.  It wouldn't really be video games, but you'll learn all the tools you'll need and then you could program games as a hobby and for extra stuff to put on your resume.  CS is a very marketable degree, so you'll be able to get a job even if it's not in the video game industry.  However, this is not the way to go if don't like spending 6 hours in front of the computer tearing your hair out trying to get programs to compile.  And with tools you will learn, you might be able to make games for phones and make some money that way too.
  • You could try the type of work that your aunt does.  Is there anyway you could possibly shadow them over the summer?  That way you'll be able to see if you enjoy doing that sort of thing.

I hope that helped you.  Good luck.

Today I got a Pre-Calculus/Java Programming professor to approve me into both classes, allowing me to skip College Algebra and Trigenometry :D

So I got ALL A's this semester. I took 4 classes all while working no less than 38-40 hours every single week in one busy ass pharmacy. My classes were:

Effective Speaking

Intermediate Algebra

Western Civilization

General Psychology

I'm on break this summer to focus on getting certified at work for a pay raise and to expand my current job options. I will be back to school in the fall, currently registered for 3 classes, but debating a 4th one. My Pre-Calculus class will take up my Monday-Thursday mornings and I have to have enough extra time to be available at work for at least 38 hours a week. If I add an extra class it's going to steal an extra day away from being able to work. I will still be available to work 40 hours a week but if I did I wouldn't have a single day off a week aside from a 6 hour break between classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Which would be plenty of time to get school work done, but I'll be more tired and I also have to fit in family doctor appts and time to go grocery shopping. Without a day off those things become more crammed. If I only take 3 classes I can still get done in about the same length of time as if I took an extra class but only if I take that extra class later and that would be putting it into a semester with either a more difficult calculus class, a physics class, and/or a more difficult programming class. Any advice is appreciated! I am debating the possibility of that class being online so I don't have to fit it around my work schedule but I don't do well with online classes personally.

Also, what is everyone else doing with their summer? Classes? Work? Internships? Vacations?
