There's a great moment right at the start of Kingdom Hearts that I feel sums up the relationship between Sora and RIku perfectly. It takes place while the two race right after Kairi wakes up Sora on the beach.
The important thing to note is that as they run, Riku is looking over his shoulder at Sora. The race means nothing in the long run, and Riku is ahead of Sora, but still, RIku feels that he has to be sure that he's in the lead. He's always looking over his shoulder to make sure that Sora is behind him. It kind of sets up Riku's motivation for the rest of the game: he wants to be the alpha, and knows that he has all the skill and is in many ways the hero of their little gang, but still is not secure enough to feel that this position won't be shaken. So later on, when Sora not only becomes independent, but in many ways exceeds what Riku is capable of, he has a hard time dealing with it, because Sora has finally passed him in that little race. Riku can't focus on how he's doing because he's so concerned with how other people are doing in relation to him.
