Ok folks, I've been doing some reading, and I believe there may be some connection in Kingdom Hearts X to the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism, which is supposedly the oldest religion in existence. In Zoroastrian mythology, Ahura Mazda, the God of Light, created the world in seven stages: the Sky, Water, Earth, Flora, Fauna, the first Man: Keyumars, and Fire.
Let's have a closer look at the blades of the foreteller's keyblades. First, Leopardos:
The blade of the Leopardos keyblade resembles a lightning bolt; the Leopardos foreteller represents the Sky.
Next, the Vulpeus foreteller (Ava):
It may be difficult to see depending on the colour/brightness settings on your device, but on the light blue parts of the blade is what appears to be a tidal wave; Ava represents water. Also, Ava is a name derived from Aban, which in turn is the middle-Persian equivalent of the Avestan word Apas, meaning 'Waters'. The only known use of the Avestan language is in the scripture of the Zoroastrian religion.
Next, the Ursus foreteller:
The Ursus keyblade appears to have a rocky motif; the Ursus foreteller is Earth.
Now, the Anguis foreteller:
If one looks closely at the blade and the hilt, there are vines and leaves present; the Anguis foreteller represents flora.
And finally, the Unicornis foreteller:
This one was a little harder for me to discern, but looking at it, the blade sort of resembles a bow and arrow. Bows are traditionally associated with hunting; the Unicornis foreteller represents fauna.
Ahriman, the evil Lord of darkness, tried to destroy the seven creations one by one. Foreseeing this, Ahura Mazda created six Archangels to protect the seven creations. He made himself the Archangel of Mankind. Ahriman failed to destroy all the creations, except Keyumars, who succumbed to sickness and died.
If we assume that the sixth apprentice represents Keyumars, who was the only creation to succumb to darkness, then it explains why he never became a foreteller - he was the only one who succumbed to the darkness (Ahriman), and was therefore deemed not worthy of becoming a foreteller.
But who represents the Archangel of fire? Ahura Mazda's final creation was Fire. An Archangel of fire was also created to protect this element. Who, in Kingdom Hearts lore, represents fire? That's right, Lea. My theory is that there is a sixth foreteller we currently don't know about, who is a replacement for the failed sixth apprentice, and Lea is the reincarnation of this foreteller.
There is one Keyblade wielder missing; and that's Sora. Sora could be representative of the sixth apprentice and Keyumars, as he succumbed to the darkness in Dream Drop Distance and failed the Mark of Mastery. Therefore, I do not believe Sora is one of the seven lights; didn't Nomura say that not all of the people expected to fill the roles necessarily will? I believe the seven lights are:
Mickey (Sent by Master Yen Sid, the Archangel of Mankind and reincarnation of the Foretellers' Master, to act on his behalf)
Ventus (Archangel of Sky and reincarnation of Leopardos Foreteller)
Kairi ( Archangel of Water and reincarnation of Ava/Vulpeus Foreteller)
Terra (Archangel of Earth and reincarnation of Ursus Foreteller)
Aqua (Archangel of Flora and reincarnation of Anguis Foreteller)
Riku (Archangel of Fauna and reincarnation of Unicornis Foreteller)
Lea (Archangel of Fire and reincarnation of unnamed 6th Foreteller)
A little more information that may interest you: There's a superboss in Final Fantasy X-2 called Angra Mainyu; this is another name for Ahriman, the evil lord of darkness, so it would seem Square is already familiar with Zoroastrian mythology.
What do you guys think? A mindblowing analogy, or just mere coincidence?
