KH2 would have been the PERFECT ending for the current saga.
If you've played at least 2 Final Fantasy games this will make much more sense.
Now, what if Tetsuya decided to take Kingdom Hearts down the Final Fantasy route after KH2. Meaning each game would be a numbered title and be an entirely new installment and have nothing to do with the previous entry.
After KH2, we never see Sora Kairi or Riku again and every game after KH2 (KH3, KH4) introduces a completely new cast of characters (including FF and Disney), worlds, each game would still contain the basic elements that would define a standard KH game. E.g, there'd still be the same basic things within each new game-keyblades, the action RPG style, disney characters, FF characters, heartless, nobodies etc.
Themes such as light and darkness and the heart could re-occur but each installment would be separate from the last. Sequels to each numbered game would still be possible.
The games would still be action oriented but each system itself would be different. For example, both FF10 and FF7 are both turned based, but in FF7 you've got the materia system whilst in FF10 there's the sphere grid system. In FF8 there's the junction system, etc. Each KH game would still be an action rpg, but the levelling up systems and battle systems would differ with each new title.
If you've played at least 2 Final Fantasy games you'll understand what I'm saying. Do you think KH would still be as successful? Would you have preferred the series that way?
Benefits of having the KH series this way after KH2:
Wider variety of battle systems to chose from. Each installment would bring something unique to the table. There'd be something for everyone.
New characters every installment, so no-one is a carbon copy of another character (this current saga is infamous for making 85% the cast look the same)
New and unique villains in each installment!
No ridiculously convoluted story.
No handheld canon titles, the games would evolve with the times and be on home consoles. Thus there would be a HUGE quality increase and less restrictions: more worlds, better looking and sounding environments, longer games, more post game content. This also means no buying different consoles all the time, there's 4-5 years between each game so you've got plenty of time to be up to date with the latest console.
It's taken 15 years to finish 1 story. 1 story per game would've been easier.
You're probably getting a higher quality product for the same amount of money too.
How could you not want this . The series would've been better off like this IMO. Each game would take longer to make but the QUALITY would be better, I'd rather wait 5 years between games and get a FF13 quality game rather than have a 358/2 days or BBS looking game. The stories would've been better too imo.
Allow me to elaborate, if you've played FF13 or seen footage you can't deny the graphics look gorgeous, there are tons of interesting sound effects and the sheer quality of the game is just  . We've never received a KH game even close to that, we're in 2016 too! The art in the original BBS and Days are just  (handhelds titles ofc), if the series was like I stated-the devs would have more time to work on the game, thus less restrictions and dumbing down of the art style, more resources. Heck, even the combat systems could've been better (no more floaty combos).
What do you guys think? Please read the whole post before you type anything
