So I was gonna go get a few job applications in town tomorrow and one of the places I was thinking about applying at is gamestop. So I am here to ask you guys if any of you had a job there and what your experience was. Is it a good place to start my job search or should I stay away? I'm just asking in terms of hours worked there and what the workers were like, all that fun stuff! So if you guys could tell me your honest opinions it would much appreciated!  :smile:

Why work for the devil?

Actually if you get to an interview with them one of the best questions to ask is "How's the current team get on?  Do they get along" etc.  It shows you're interested in the people there and teamwork, even if you ain't.  

 

I've personally never worked there, but I'm sure regardless it would really vary from place to place (location of the store).  A good option is to ask the people working there themselves next time you're in there.  There was one point sometime before I finished High School for Uni I just asked people at their stores while I was shopping if they enjoyed their job.  A security guard told me he found his job boring af, only moments of interest are when someone actually tries to steal otherwise it's literally like watching paint dry.  I liked that.  People tend to be more honest in their opinions when you're just a curious customer rather than a perspective employee.  

I mean a job is a job. While you're there though make sure it's a well maintained store and you like the employees already there. Gamestop isn't the worst place to work at, I feel people just exaggerate their hate for Gamestop a little too much.

Depends, if you want to spend your entire day trying to peddle unnecessary subscriptions onto 13 year olds and/or indifferent parents all while having a manager breathing down your neck saying you need to make more subscription sales, then sure why not. Honestly I don't recommend it, the best thing about it would be being able to play games early, and maybe the people though for some people at GS it's just a job and they don't care for games in the sense that a gamer does.

Hey, if you want to get a job there, go for it. It's your decision.

"Would you like to pre-order this new AAA game from Insert Large Developer/Publisher Here that's paying our company to advertise for them and only really takes 10 seconds out of your life for one decision?"

 

or

 

"Wanna sign up for Pro for these whatever benefits and also takes only about 10 seconds or less to answer?"

 

can get annoying.

 

But, really, I haven't had many bad experiences at GameStop. And not all managers are breathing down your neck, my brother used to work at GameStop and the manager was actually pretty cool. If you want to work there, go ahead.

I've asked the employees at my closest one about it before and they said that it isn't too bad but sometimes that hours can be pretty tight especially over summer since there's no major holidays. I applied with a friend for fun (since I already had a job) and they didn't end up interviewing us since they already had so many people, so take that into account

I think the Gamestops vary considerably depending on the specific store that you're wanting to apply to.  I have applied and have been interviewed by Gamestop in the past and I saw no reason not to work there except for two things:

 

1) the pay was a bit lower than most retailers

2) they offered fewer hours than many part-time jobs

 

The store that I applied to and had been interviewed at was very nice.  It was a busy location and the store was clean.  The manager was awesome and he was a guy I could really see myself working for; he was easy to approach and genuinely cared about his employees.  I would try applying for the position and then, if you get selected for an interview, prepare in advance some questions that you would like to ask the store or assistant manager.  Perhaps ask what the team environment is like, what the clientele is like in the specific area (unless you already know a lot about the town you're applying to, which it sounds like you do), what sort of things are important to your manager, and that kind of thing.  Get a good feel for the manager you're interviewing with as well.  Normally you can tell if someone's a jerk or not by the initial interview.  I've been in retail for a few years and no one company is the same across the board.  Each store is different, and it's all about the management and the people you work with that define a good or bad experience.  For me my #1 priority in a job is the management and how much they care about their employees.  I've found that if you have good management your life with the company will be so much better.
