Ever since the first gameplay trailer for the upcoming FF7 remake was released, a lot of people have jumped to baseless assumptions and conclusions that the game has a KH battle system... *Activates rant mode.
Please read my whole argument before formulating a response.
To begin with, I think the main reason for this is because some people in this fandom have never played a turn based RPG. Therefore, their idea of a turn based system is usually like this
Your party stand on one side of the screen, the enemies stand on the other and you wait until your ATB gauge fills up(The original FF7 used an ATB gauge.
Not all turn based RPGS are like this.
Look at the FF13 trilogy, those games are turn based but contain action elements. Lightning can perform mini combos and moves around the area a little bit.
If you look at the FF7 remake trailer, it seems to be leaning towards this style of gameplay, not Kingdom Hearts.
Let's look at the gameplay trailer. But before you do, I'd equate this trailer to what the first 2 KH3 trailers where (E3 2013, D23 2013), demos from extremely early in development.
You can tell this is a early footage, because during the original game Barret isn't present at the fountain area we see at 1:18, but in this trailer he is. Also, Cloud and Barret's HP is EXTREMELY high for this point in the game, it's at like 1600-1700, so it's clearly a number they just threw in before recording footage.
Skip to 1:18 or anytime you see the HUD. Attack, Magic, Summon and Item seem cool, just like in a KH game right? Oh wait, there's also a Defend action (which was present in the original and in many other ATB/ turn based RPGS).
Why would you make a game like Kingdom Hearts or DMC or even like FF15 and have a defend option on screen?
Why not reduce it to a button press like in a normal action rpg?
At 1:29 and practically all other gameplay sequences, the enemies hardly fight back. Therefore it's not their turn to attack.
If you've played FF13 this will make more sense. If this game did have a FF15 or a KH vibe, then the enemies would fight back a lot more. In addition, they don't move around too often, just like in FF13.
Now you could argue that there is a lock on thingy on the enemies, but that doesn't make it an action rpg.. If anything I'd say this game is going to be similar to FF13 except you can move around and switch between party members.
Why do I think you can move around? Look at the gameplay segments by the fountain, in one scene you're in one place, in the next scene you're in another. If this was like the old FF games, then you'd just standing in the same spot.
Oh and another thing, if this was anything like an ARPG, why is there a limit break gauge? Why not just Cloud and Barret's limit breaks into sequences of combos/abilities or button presses after filling a gauge? From what I gather, once the small red bar fills up, the attack just happens automatically.
To conclude, I think this game will be a mixture of both ARPGS and the original ATB system. This game will be FF13+FF7 with some action rpg elements such as moving around. The only reason I made this thread was because people saying this is EXACTLY like KH and saying it has the same battle system are annoying and the comments are surface level. This game isn't as actiony as some people think and will be disappointed when they realise that.
I am NOT saying it's turn based, but I'm not saying it's an ARPG either. It's more of a mixture, which I'm extremely happy about. I'll buy it either way. We'll just have to wait and see for more gameplay.
