Forced to enter college you don't want

Posted

The title basically sum up this entire thread. My parents are the one who is forcing me

Well for some reason people say that we need to attend college with subject that we like, but sometime people also say that we need to attend college with a high-probability of getting a work. And the core of the problem is, I'm being forced to attend college that, I don't really like or fond of.. well if we see it from the probability of getting a work, I don't really mind it but it would be really empty. You know what it's like to be forced to do something you don't really like, even though people said it was good. So any advice on my current situation?

I can more or less relate to you, because I studied something that I didn't like!  Okay, I wasn't forced, it was out of my own volition, but only because I thought it would be something I'd keep doing, and that was barbering!

I took a course in Arecibo's Instituto De Banca Y Comercio, and well, I passed with great grades and all, and I was working at a barber shop during one time!  But, when I saw that I had no clients and I was just sitting around doing nothing, I got really discouraged, ya know?  That's when I decided I wanted no part in doing that anymore, ya know?  I got calls from the college and all offering to help me, but I didn't want to, ya know?  I wasn't crazy for barbering to begin with, but I had chosen to study it as a plan B in case my main plan doesn't work out! But I really ended up disliking plan B, so yeah, that's the story!  But it was out of my own choice that this resulted. I could have chosen to study something else for my plan B, but well, I did things kinda rushed, ya know?  That's life experience for ya!

(In case you're wondering, my main goal is to either be an artist for comic books, manga, graphic arts, enter voice acting, or be a novelist! Any of the three or a hybrid of the three would be fine, ya know?)

But well, the advice I can relay to you is that if you're forced into this college, choose something to study that although it isn't what you have planned, you at least like. Don't choose something you don't like, or it'll be hell for you, ya know? Hope this helps! :)

So who's forcing you? Your parents? The school itself? That's kinda an important detail we're missing here. That being said, if you don't like the way things are going, then change it. I wasn't super passionate about what I chose to study either, and by the time I realized that what I was doing in class wasn't something I really wanted to to, I had so much invested in that degree it was too late to do anything. So here I am, with absolutely know idea where I'm going. But if you know you're not going to like something, don't do it.

I can relate too. Honestly, half of me doesn't even want to go to college. Truth is, I'm terrified to. But the thing is, I feel like I have to. Everyone expects me to. My parents want me to, everyone asks me what college I'm going to (to which I tell them I'm not in college) as my peers around me seem to have their entire life planned out while going to some big school (my former classmates) and it just makes me feel like a complete lazy looser. I feel like I'm not gonna get anywhere in life, and I'm a waste. Honestly I'm just gonna be going to college soon because people want me to... But you have to do what you want. The future is so unpredictable, nothing is certain. That being said, do what you enjoy. Because honestly if you listen to everyone else and do what you don't want to do, you're just gonna be firetrucked in the end. I'm not trying to sound disacouraging or anything, but seriously. Do what you want with your life. My successful art teacher didn't go to college until five years after graduating! Take your time, go at your own pace. Work hard, don't be afraid. Make yourself happy. Don't let others make you do what they think will make you happy. They don't know what'll make you happy. You do.

Thank you for all your advice! And actually,,, I pretty much can't do anything about it. It's too late for me to try to change my parents (they are the one who is responsible for all of this) mind. Not that they would hear me though, but thank you guys for giving me the advice! Maybe I will try to brainwash them somehow..

Oops, missing that part! My parents, they are responsible for this madness .. anyway thank you for your advice! I hope I could do much about it though

Well, if you're going to college, it means you're a legal adult, so technically they can't force you to do anything.  If you want to attend a different college, do it, it's your life, not theirs, live it the way you want to.

You're most welcome!  Oh wow, your parents don't sound like the most supportive people, huh? :(  That's too bad!  Well, I suggest you try at all costs to see if you can sit down with them and talk things out! Hopefully, you could get them to listen to you, and hear what it is that you truly want to do, ya know? As long as you can get communication, you can be able to settle things, ya know?  I wish you the best of luck and blessings, friend!  God bless you! :)

I know the feeling. Even though everyone else think otherwise, I have a feeling that the whole world favors logical thinking (such as science and math) over creativity (art, music, etc.); especially when you consider the following link: http://traitdunion-online.eu/mataciute3loreta3s/2012/05/03/is-art-underrated-nowadays/

And besides, in the working world... unless you're lucky enough to get the best of both, you can either get a high-paying job at the expense of your happiness or a job where you don't get as much and yet, you're happy. A worst case scenario would be that you end up with a job that gives you the worst of both.
