Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue has officially released in Japan

As of 10:00am EST on 1/11/2017, it is January 12th in Japan, which means Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue has officially been released! This is the first new Kingdom Hearts release for consoles since 2012's Dream Drop Distance on the Nintendo 3DS, so many fans are excited about the release, but that also means spoilers will be across all platforms and social media outlets. To commemorate this release, we encourage you to join the discussion on our Kingdom Hearts 2.8 forum, but we will also be heavily enforcing policies regarding spoilers. Please read the spoiler policy here before posting to the forums.
 
Prior to the official release, the trophy lists for both Kingdom Hearts 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage- and Kingdom Hearts HD Dream Drop Distance were revealed. Feel free to check out these lists and make a plan of action for completing the game!
 
(SPOILERS) One fan was also lucky enough to receive a copy of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 early, and they showed us the disc and provided some in-game screenshots of -A Fragmentary Passage-.
 
We also want to warn fans of the possibility of the "lengthy scene leading into Kingdom Hearts III" being released across social media platforms. In addition to that, streamers are sure to be playing this game on Twitch, YouTube, and UStream, so be careful to avoid spoilers!
 
Congratulations to fans in Japan who are currently enjoying Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and may your hearts be your guiding key!

Series director Tetsuya Nomura says that Kingdom Hearts III's release is still a while away

Speaking with Famitsu Weekly magazine this week, Tetsuya Nomura, the director of the Kingdom Hearts series had some words to say about the Kingdom Hearts series, and the development status of Kingdom Hearts III.
 
Nomura stated that Kingdom Hearts III (along with Final Fantasy VII Remake, which he is also working on) still has "a ways to go", with some worlds that remain untouched so far, and other unannounced worlds advancing in production. The relevant excerpt from the interview can be seen below, originally provided by Hachima and translated by Siliconera.

 
The quote appears to imply that Kingdom Hearts III will definitely not be releasing in 2017, although, Nomura aims to show some of the game's progress off sometime this year.

As we approach the Japanese release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, some lucky fans have already received an early copy of the game. With the release of some early copies, some have already completed the game. Tetsuya Nomura interviewed in latest issue of Famitsu about Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura has been interviewed by Famitsu in their January 26th edition, which will be available January 12th. In this interview, Nomura talks about Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue along with Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

New AI Programmer hired in December 2016 for Kingdom Hearts III

According to a LinkedIn profile, in December 2016 a new AI Programmer was hired for Kingdom Hearts III. Their profile describes their responsibilities in this role as focusing on programming AI nodes and working with planners to script enemy AI behavior. Square Enix was previously hiring for Kingdom Hearts III back in July of 2016, with their focus then being on an Assistant Director, Effect Designer, Production Planner, as well as a Lighting Artist.

Shortly following their post on Birth by Sleep 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage-, PlayStation Japan's blog has posted another feature, this time focusing on Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, the cinematic component of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Thank you to aibo_ac7 for the tip!

New Kingdom Hearts series memorial stained glass clock to be showcased on January 9, 2017 at Shinjuku Station in Japan for series 15th anniversary

Square Enix has just updated their Japanese Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue website with a link to a new memorial site for the Kingdom Hearts series 15th Anniversary containing details on a new Kingdom Hearts series memorial stained glass clock. This stained glass clock will be showcased at Shinjuku Station in Japan from January 9th, 2017 until January 15th, 2017 as part of the series' 15th anniversary. It will also feature a large video screen featuring moments from the Kingdom Hearts and a mural honoring characters and moments from the series.
 
The website features the tagline "The story starts moving again."
 
Pictures, such as Kingdom Hearts characters from the past 15 years were also exhibited. Check it out below. This will be exhibited as a mural painting.
 



 



 
There is also a Twitter campaign related to the memorial clock. The campaign invites people to take pictures in person with the memorial clock or to use one of the prepared stained glass images given on the official site with the hashtag #キングダムハーツ15周年.

UPDATE 1: The Kingdom Hearts Memorial Clock is now set up and open to the public! The website has also been updated to include a virtual version of the clock featuring all the games in the Kingdom Hearts series with short video clips and images. They've also added a link to easily participate in the previously mentioned Twitter campaign if you cannot make it to the Memorial Clock in person. Birth by Sleep 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage- ends with a lengthy scene leading into Kingdom Hearts III

In Game Informer's review for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, it is stated that Birth by Sleep 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage- ends with a lengthy cutscene that presumably leads into the beginning of Kingdom Hearts III. Gameinformer describes the scene as characters "embarking on the next part of their journey" and that the scene overall moves the story forward.

Game Informer review confirms Critical Mode for Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage- upon completion

With the first review of the English copy of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue now out and done by Game Informer, this means that now the game has been completed. In their review, Game Informer has confirmed that in Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage-, once you complete the game in any mode, you will automatically unlock Critical Mode and you'll be able to replay the game on Critical Mode.
