Probably because, while Darth Maul hasn't much of a personality, he's more frightening and ominous, and more of what people expect of a Star Wars villain. I enjoyed Kylo Ren as a character, but some people like a character that isn't so childish.

Since everyone else said just about everything.... I would recommend Rune Factory 4. A fun action-RPG with romance and farming; think Harvest Moon except you can romance elf-girls and fight giant chickens. My testament to it is that it's my highest played 3DS game with over 300 hours put into it.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. That's it. That's all you'll ever need.

Also make sure the exhaust port doesn't somehow blow the darn thing up

Definitely try talking to him, getting to know him more. Really hone in on what you both like, and try to connect on that, if possible. I dislike Five Nights at Freddies immensely. It started as a cool, unique indie game that became an overhyped, repetitive series that was overblown by the fandom, with a story that never really seemed to go anywhere, and seemed to almost go back on itself, with ridiculously stupid ways to actually learn anything about the plot.
