Should I go into Persona for the story

Posted

I've played one of the games before, but I don't like the gameplay, but I really enjoy the story

I played Persona 3 and really enjoyed it, though the gameplay is pretty similar throughout all games to my knowledge. I've heard good things about Persona 4 (and watched the anime) so maybe give that a try? 3 and 4 are my personal favourites!

As with most games, it's the mix I enjoy. If you're not into the gameplay, probably best give it a miss. Persona 4 Golden features a pretty refined combat system, but it's the same structure in the end.

Persona 1 and Persona 2 IS aren't good games but have good plots.

Persona 2 EP, P3 and P4 are subjective.

but play nocturne because i know that's better than p3.

Read Persona 1 and Persona 2 IS manga

I can only speak for Persona 4 (which is a fantastic game), but just watch the anime for the story.

It really depends.

The story is good, but if you don't like turn based combat then I doubt you will fully enjoy it.

I only played them for the story. The gameplay seems alright for people into the whole collecting and fusing thing, but I just didn't care for it.

Then I guess I should just watch walkthoughs of the games to get the story?

Probably best to get a taste of what they are like and if you enjoy it then give it a try. No harm in watching someone else play it first c:

Yes, Persona is firetrucking amazing, I prefer P1, P2IS and P2EP but I still love 3 and 4. And VERY MUCH looking forward to 5. I love the gameplay and story so its a win-win for me. Id say you can read the manga and watch the animes for just the basic plot

No no no, I'd still go in as a player. There is so much customization and player-based content that they're meant to be played from the player's perspective. I'd just play on the easiest difficulties available, that's what I did for Persona Q (the gameplay was such a slog that I just went from Normal to Very Easy mode about halfway through the game just to get it over with)

If you wanna get into Persona.........start with Persona 4.........specifically the Golden version on PSVita and PsTV

It's more beginner friendly but's almost as long as Xenoblade in case you don't like long games

if you couldn't get into persona..........try the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games like SMT4 and it's sequel SMT4 Apocalypse......both of which are on the 3DS

I'\d recommend SMT4 over Nocturne because of the difficulty cuz Nocturne is brutal for beginners

Nocturne just doesn't explain anything so that's why it's considered hard but legit just read a guide on the game around for the start and after that you're good

I don't like to extensively use a guide when I play a game unless I'm really stuck

And as I said before,Nocturne is not beginner friendly...and sadly neither is Persona 3 unless you're playing the portable version

So usually my recommendation for gateway SMT games would either be SMT4,Persona 4 and maybe Devil Survivor 1

Making it harder than you really think, why do you think they had game manuals back then? You could just do the same today but go online to see that. You dont need a guide for the rest of the game. Dungeons are the best to this day.

I'm mostly referring to the difficulty spike cuz while I love Nocturne a lot.........the game is hard, really hard especially if you're going after the 8 fiends for the True Demon route. And some areas has a pretty high encounter rate that can frustrate beginners

Nocturne is what I call an SMT veteran game,by that I mean one at least needs to have beaten an SMT game before this so they could get into it without suffering through beginner traps

I don't think this is about difficulty, BUT... P4 Golden has a very easy difficulty option which is supposedly very, VERY easy. Doesn't really make the dungeons less repetitive, but at least it helps you get through them faster, as you don't really have to pay much thought to what you do in battle. And thus, you can focus more on the social links and the actual story.

Can't say anything about the anime, as I haven't watched it, but maybe that's an option too...?

For Persona 3 though, I'd suggest you watch the movies, since they're actually pretty nice. ^^ Especially since the dungeons (well, the dungeon) can be extremely boring as it's literally the same thing for over 200 floors I think...? Of course they're still not quite as good as the game is, and leace a lot of stuff out, but I at least found them enjoyable even after playing the game.

Persona 5 has enough changed to make it distinguishable from the previous Persona games. Go get the game, you're doing yourself an injustice by just looknig at walkthroughs.
