That's not the lazy man's way, that's the only way.  And missing a dodge roll by a nanosecond will get you killed.

Eh, I doubt anyone has ever said KH2's combat is perfect, and if they have, they clearly know nothing about the game. It's the best in the series, but nowhere near perfection.

Mash Square as Ven/Aqua at max level dodges, and you physically cannot be hit. lol@gamedesign

 

but yea, this has been known for awhile. It has something to do with Terra's retaliation startup and the air finisher cancelling it, since he technically should be retaliating throughout the entire fight.
