Why do we want to know how someone dies

Posted

Let's say someone dies, celebrity, or regular person.

Isn't it curious that the thing we instantly ask ourselves after hearing the news is how?

does anyone else search on details of how someone dies?

I've noticed that whenever a regular person dies and I hear about it on Facebook, the  'how they died' question instantly comes to mind, whether that person is important to me or not. And of course I'm not gonna be all upfront about it and comment, How did they die... so I go on super stalker mode. Whenever I don't find the answer I'm like not satisfied

I hope I'm not the only one....

assuming many others are like this, I ask, why are we like this, why are we so caught up on how someone dies ?? Why are we so interested in the details, why do we like more detail, and why do we seek it??

Simple: we wanna know if the same can happen to us. Especially when it's someone around our age.

Also we are too curious...

hmm idk, personally I feel like its more a curiosity thing, and nothing to do with if it can happen to me. And idk why I'm so curious

edit: did not read that last comment you made oops

The only reason I can think of is human nature, humans are curious creatures,we always try to demystify everything.Everything happens for a reason so when someone dies we can't just accept it and move on,we need anwsers. Its like when you fail at something like an exam, the first thing that comes to mind is why I fail, what did I do wrong(At least that's what I do).

I know it's obnoxious to pose the counter question, but truly, why not? There's nothing to be lost from finding out, and in many cases, it can serve as a way to avoid something like it happening again. Robin Williams, for instance, obviously suffered from some deep rooted mental health issues, and possibly even dementia; knowing these things helps supply methodology and research for cures and treatments.

Rude >:(

jk haha

true nothing is lost from it, it just seems weird the curiosity in the deaths of complete strangers. just thinking too much about it tbh x)

basically came up with the same solution myself, we're just curious little firetruckers. I guess it's also if someone dies young it goes against  the natural way of things, so we are more interested. But we know it's something unnatural, so why do we want to go further into the exact unnatural way they died, even if we didn't know them. curiosity

I think because a lot of times it's a surprise. For example, I really don't think of Anna Kendrick at all. I just unknowingly assume she is doing okay wherever she is. But if I heard tomorrow that she died, I would want to know how a healthy person died seemingly out of nowhere.

Compare this to someone like Stan Lee. He's really old and will probably die any day now, so if I hear he died, I wouldn't ask why, I'd just assume it was from old age.

Long story short, I'd be curious only if it was a surprise.

If this hit home and you never knew how, then learn in the future, wouldn't it hurt you that you were never told the truth?

I agree about the surprise part, but I'd say it's regardless of if you know them or not. Like I've been in the situation where a fb friend posts about their died friend, who I didn't know at all until that post, and still I was curious about the untimely death.

even so, you can come to the conclusion that it's an unnatural death,so why go further in detail to find out the Exact reason of death, even if its someone you didn't know at all. It keeps leading me back to plain curiosity

Perhaps subconsciously a little of it is about preventing your own death/loved ones deaths.

but the thing is, when I get curious of how someone died, Its never me wanting to know a new unidentified way someone could die. Like I'm not expecting they died in a way no ever has died before, therefore it can benefit me since it was previously unknown etc.

In other words, coming into it, I'm expecting the death to be caused by one of the possibilities I already know, and therefore i'm not primarily driven by "I wanna know to help protect me in the future"

usually it's more a curiosity thing, what drives me personally is plainly cause I wanna know how they died, and I find that weird lol.

By studying what has happened to the people of the past, we can have a better idea about what might happen to us in the future.

Why do we keep historical records?  We need to learn from the past, so we can have a better future.

That, and we're all just like THIS Silly, Innocent Character!!

true

and trueeee

Because it gives us a sense of our own mortality: movie stars and singers seem immortal, untouchable, so hearing they've died brings us to a point where we know we're going to die, as well, and it weirdly satisfies some part of us.

That, and knowing you've outlived someone is a sick sort of reassurance you've got more years to go than they did.

Just what I think, anyway.

interesting take on it.

interesting take on it.

Just how I view it. Everyone's obsessed with death lately, with all the sad passings of celebrities, and it seems sort of like they enjoy it sometimes.
