So let me start by saying that I didn't used to like anime for a long time, but then I came across some gems and am now quite the fan.  I really love anime for their immersive stories and incredible casts of characters, and would be fond of any series that plays to these elements.  Here are some that I like, to give you an idea of my taste:

 

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (just everything about it, really, from its storytelling to its suspense, and I loved the characters)

Death Note (I loved the suspense and immersive story)

Erased (It was very intriguing and similar to Death Note in a lot of ways.  I also found the characters to be especially relatable)

Aldnoah.Zero (I enjoyed the political intrigue as well as the storyline, but it was also amazing in terms of soundtrack)

Gundam Wing (for essentially the same reasons as Aldnoah, excepting maybe the storyline.  I liked the politics and the characters)

Fate/Stay Night (and rest of Fate series, though Stay Night is my favorite.  I love how beautiful this anime is, from its graphics, music choice, and overall storytelling and emotion.  I felt that this was a well-rounded series that I just enjoyed immensely.)

Yu-Gi-Oh (nostalgia reasons)

 

Things that I typically dislike in an anime:

 

High-school settings

Slice of Life

Anything too oriental

 

I've tried Fairy Tail and didn't really care for it, and while I somewhat like Sword Art Online I feel that it has its fair share of problems.  I've also tried Code Geass but I just couldn't get myself into it, though I know that it is popular and well loved.  Does anyone have some suggestions on what I may like that is similar to the ones that I mentioned enjoying?  Thanks!

But all immensely gold choices. I'd say if you like Gundam, you may be interested in Eureka Seven. It's a more lighthearted mecha anime, but still quite emotional especially towards the end. However it's quite slow at the beginning, but once you get past maybe the first five episodes it's an incredibly sweet story about a boy trying to make his mark on the world

 

Also this is quite an old one, but I feel Pandora Agent has a similar vibe to Death Note. They're both quite psychological in a way, but it's been a long time since I watched it so i don't have all the info.

 

Edit: here's one out of left field for you, but if you enjoyed death note you might like Bakuman, which is made by the same duo. It's a completely different anime series, it's a slice of life about two aspiring manga writers, but it's so firetrucking good.

My Hero Academia: This anime is about a young boy named Izuku Midoriya, who wishes to become a hero, despite not having powers, which in the anime are referred to as quirks. 80 percent of the population has quirks, but he's one person that didn't end up having one. But even so, he believes that without powers, he can still become a hero, and he always looks up to All Might, his hero and inspiration! I won't say anymore for the sake of keeping you curious, but let me just say that this anime is pure gold, and it's been said that this might be one of the next big shonen anime series of this generation! And rightfully so, because the animation, voice acting, story, characters, music and overall quality are top notch, and I'm sure you'd love it! Oh, and it's a super hero genre kind of anime, so there's that, too! You should definitely give it a watch!

Death Parade: Oh, this anime is one I highly recommend! It's one I'm sure you'll love, and one you'll probably digest and analyze deeply, as it deals with the concept of death and the afterlife! You see, this anime is about a place called Quindecim, a bar that is a sort of limbo for people who die. But here's the catch! The people that come into this place have no memory of dying, and Decim, the bartender, invites them to play a series of games, and through these games, Decim silently analyzes them and sees how their true colors unfold. Based on the results of the game's outcome and how it leaves the two people in question, they are either reincarnated or sent to oblivion. It's an anime that's psychological in the sense that it'll leave you thinking a lot, it'll make you think about life, and the different pairs of people that come each episode really stick! They have relatable situations that could strike home! AND THIS ANIME HAS AN EPIC ENDING SONG THAT SENDS SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE EVERY TIME I HEAR IT!

 

But yeah, these are just three among more or less 70 to 80 anime series I've watched! Hope these I mentioned pique your interest!

I am not that into anime so on top of my head I can reccomend only One piece (even though I stopped watching it years ago) that should keep you busy for a long time. My other woulde earth girl arjuna its a beautifull anime (13 episodes sadly) about earth and the problems of modern civilisation I would say you should watch it for the soundtrack alone could not find any digital copy of it but thank god there are CDs of the entire album. My last recommendation its on netflix and there is only one season as of now and they are taking their sweet time but I think it cant take that long anymore until int continues.

I've heard of My Hero Academia, though I don't much about it, sad to say.  It sounds like it is well-loved, from what you're sharing, and it might we worth checking into. . I'm not normally one for Slice of Life and I actually have seen bits and pieces of Your Lie in April, but it sounds like it has a sweet story if looking beyond some of the more slightly cliche moments.  Death Parade sounds very intriguing and very much up my alley--I'll have to check this one out!

In Code Gease,I'd say that the 2 main characters are well developped and a few around them,but the rest not so much,but the story is really good,if you like good stories this is a must watch I'd say,it kinda reminded me of Death Note a bit actually

Oh, trust me, My Hero Academia is truly a piece of work, and it's getting more praise day by day! It's an anime that deserves the praise and love it gets, because you just truly get immersed into the story and the characters, and I love how there is emphasis on both heroes and villains, and the way superheroes are viewed and whatnot lend an interesting angle to the genre! Overall, I'm sure you'd develop a good taste for it!

 

The thing about Your Lie In April is that the anime makes you have a really fond appreciation for music, and besides that, you really get to see how Kousei's life has changed because of his talent for the piano. It leads to thoughtful, and also sad and dark times in his life, and it's an anime that'll keep you on the edge of your seat!

 

OH YES! Death Parade is definitely one you will end up loving, and you can watch it fairly easily enough, since it has only about 13 episodes. But despite it being short, each episode has depth to it, which I dug very much! Here's a small clip so you can get an idea of what to expect!

 

 

And that's a bit for you to see how the anime feels and its tone, without spoiling anything vital! Also, if you're feeling concerned that Decim is a bland character, (The bartender.) then don't worry, because the story develops him nicely!

 

I was reading the other posts you quoted, and I agree, anime has an extraordinary way of telling stories, even better so than traditional Western cartoons! Not to say that I don't love cartoons, I do, and some of them are in depth and have awesomeness radiating off them and all, but I dig anime even more because of the complex stories and overall epicness they offer! Plus, anime are always drawn in 2D, which I love, because I'm not too big a fan of 3D animated shows, Rwby and Ajin being exceptions, though.

 

AND ALSO, INUYASHA IS A MUST! I CAN TELL YOU MORE ABOUT THAT ONE IF YOU LIKE!!! It's the anime that made me fall in love with anime in the first place!
