KH1 felt like a journey, it earned its ending

I thought it would've made more sense to move on from this cast and move into a new cast for the next saga.

I always took it to mean, this will be connected in KH3

I always thought the statement would tie into Xehanorts plan but apparently not

I mean if the "Reconnect Kingdom Hearts" thing is still being used, then that means it really is just a "you remember this, eh, EH!?" moment
