Part 1

It's true that they had the chance to show more. But I'm saying that what they did do, they did well. She has a decent amount of personality in her lines and despite how little she screentime she gets she manages to go beyond being just a random unimportant character and is more, she is a part of the Destiny Trio, she has her own drives and role

Kairi being used that way was not a plot device, as that was the premise, the objective. Kairi is asleep, we need to find her. You can classify what constitutes a device in whatever way you like but I'm afraid that if we call Kairi a plot device then everything will be a plot device.

Again, the point is not that they did much, it's about how much they accomplished with so little.

You know what? I'll give you this point. Yes, Kairi's struggles do get shoved aside and never resolved. And that's not a KH1 fault. By dent of it being the first game and ending in a cliffhanger it was not exclusively KH1's job to give her as much background as possible. And even then it still bothered to give her the grandma flashback, showing there was more to her than met the eye.

Maybe if Nomura actually gave a firetruck about Kairi he'd bother to do something with her character and expand on her backstory more than just showing us some of her life in RG in BBS.

Yes, but despite that it's still very effective. After all the chasing after her, our payoff is Kairi using her newfound powers that she might not even realize she had to bring Sora back. It's suggested that it was their bond that made Kairi's powers kick in and rescue Sora from his heartless state. And see, this is good story telling to me, we aren't just told it, we see Kairi being the one that brings him back. It's a great scene specifically because of the bond that was set up between them, and if she really was a nothing of a character then I don't think the scene would've been renembered so fondly.

Another point is that we don't need to see Kairi getting to that point because that's the status quo, at the beginning of the game Riku wasn't a darkness using dick but he then becomes that way, however we weren't supposed to see Kairi getting to that point because that's where we started. And this is what I'm arguing, even with her underwhelmingly little screentime she is still used well enough.
