I'm just speaking from my experience as someone who normally plays Standard but basically everyone no matter what mode they normally play has commented on how easy 3 is. My friend struggles with the higher modes on KH2 but found KH3 Proud extremely easy. On the surface yes there's way more options but even if you keep them to a minimum bosses seem to be much quicker to beat than ever before. Most of KH2 isn't super hard don't get me wrong, but it's just that difference between easy enough and easy to the point of being boring like that guy says

I just wanted combat to be 'meatier' somehow

Well if you ask most people they’d say Vanilla KH2 was just a button-masher and very easy

Well,you know why the Xaldin fight isn’t actually difficult?

That's the only pre-FM thing that sticks out to me ?

The game is trying to make you do something it didn’t even teach you

Yeah, instead of button mashing X you need to wait and catch all the Jump commands

It’s trying to make you learn patterns and incentive use of special reaction commands,yes

But the game never made it a big deal to learn a pattern

fun fact, with the reaction boosts

I didn't find original KH2 as simplistic as 3 though even so. All KH is button-mashy to an extent but it still felt good to play for me
