I believe part of the reason NDS games stopped support was b/c the next handheld had compatibility and the base system was online-based w/ newer models only scratching at the surface of connecting outside of games. Nintendo 3DS were designed from the getgo to connect, logging users online w/ statuses and having an eshop that is easily accessible. But games themselves have their own online servers, so I guess online play w/in them falls more on the developers.

That would suck for players that play things like racing online (MK), fighting games online (SSB), and trading & battling (Pokémon).

Meanwhile, there are games w/ in-game purchases that seem to still have support for check-ins and bonuses.

Surprisingly, the Badge Arcade game still has connection support (required to even access the arcade to see the collection) w/ free plays and practice plays after ending additions to the badge catchers.
