For 1997 kids FF7 was their game
For 2001/2002, that was FFX

FFX is regarded as on par or very close to FF7 in terms of best in the series to where it boils down to individual opinions on which that person finds better

But FFX as a whole is a very strong story experience

But yeah, if you want a great entry FF that isn't as dated as FF7
