Basically you want Weapon Damage as high as possible, physical or magical depending on class/job.

Then you want your main stat high as possible, Dexterity, Strength, Mind, Intelligence, again dependant on class/job.

After that stuff like Crit, Direct Hit, etc.

And really that's all you need to worry about insofar as gear from 1-79.

Higher Item Level is almost always an upgrade when leveling.

Especially for weapon.
