I think they were looking for an object w/ more physical form like an intermediary.

Hearts just seem good for memories, which would be another component.

 

but if you have your heart as a medium, then whoever heart you pass down thru, you will live together, plus it also helps when darkness might be part of MoM, and him being a "Nobody" since his heart is in the box.
