i have done a decent number of those side quests

Make sure you get the return to ivalice stuff done too since it's required for the new relic weapon this expansion

and i learned that if you do some before you go to that area for story missions, characters will recognize you when you go there

Yeah you get extra little dialogue for things it's neat
