Look, I appreciate that, but why were you in my house to begin with? laughsinnomura

You can blame society for this one. People don't want to acknowledge that most of human history revolves around fighting over land. Fighting that primarily resulted in death.

Whether bad or good, it's the truth. And we can either ignore it or learn from it.

Those who learn from history grow to be wise and prosperous. Those who don't get consumed by history.

That's true and I agree, but well, people willing to learn from history are in short supply lol

Well, hey, it's not my fault school makes learning history about as fun as filing a tax return. While getting a lobotomy.

Can you make learning about history fun?

As someone who's studying to become a teacher, I'll say this.

Any teacher worth his salt can make ANYTHING engaging.

In fact, that's part of the job. Science proves that students who are engaged learn faster and more effectively than those who aren't.

Well Exilan is like, half our age but is super into and knowledgeable about history and I'm sure he had some crap teachers

I think schools should place more importance on "why" history is important. Just saying "he who doesn't learn from history is doomed to repeat it" isn't good enough

Oh absolutely. The significance of say...the Civil War cannot be overstated, but it was never taught to me that way. For me it was "learn about the Civil War OR ELSE".

Clearly some people missed the point of even that

I went on Twitter Saturday and the first post I saw was someone saying "man for man the confederacy was the strongest/best army in history!"

I closed the app and did not open it again for a long time after that.

Always filter by people you follow, never delve into the masses

Another thing is that even though you can teach someone about the significance of history and what occurred and why we need to understand history, some people will choose to ignore those lessons or even actively go against them, either because of their own ideologies or spite

And in that case, they simply can't be taught. You'll always find a few. Can't save everyone.

But I don't like to look at kids that way. I believe in them because...well...if I don't, who will? Getting along with each other on this world is hard enough as it is, and if I can make it just a bit easier...well, I can die happy. And I say that as someone who's seen the worst of what public education does to people.

That's all I really want out of being a teacher: make the world just a bit more tolerable for the poor neglected souls forced to endure it

Equip them for a world that will do all it can to bring them down

Fortify them into people who can overcome adversity
