Energy bending was a deus ex machina but it was something that was needed so Aang wouldn't break his code of being a pacifist. Came out of nowhere as a solution sure but it still works for the story.

Whispers are nothing like this. They break the story constantly by being shoved into stuff not actually doing anything. For the most part you can take them out and the game would more or less be the same but also better.
