Like, I'm of the opinion he doesn't need to change; story makes it clear that who he is is why he's great, but, idk, it just sounds fun lol

I still think he has depth, it's just a little more subtle when look at him broadly, but playing the games in the moment, they're pretty clear about showing that the "happy go lucky shonen himbo guy" is only one part of who he is.
personally i think 4 will be great for unflattening him for a bit, even if only for just a bit. his entire shtick is his friends being his power but in an unknown world disconnected from everyone I'm sure it'll hit different
and with xehanort showing up now, who knows how that dynamic will play out
