How does backtracking work? If I progress the story, and I don't get everything done in a region, can I come back at any time? Does the game lock you out of stuff if you progress far enough?

You unlock fast travel as you progress don't worry

Gotcha, so I won't get locked out of side quests or other stuff then if I continue the story

no, you do them whenever you want, they pointed that out before release

Does the game show you what your affinity is like with your party and does it show what synergy skills you have and haven't used for the affinity stuff?

Yes and no

It's represented by the little circle above their heads; the color, and what face it's making

Idr if you can view it as like, a meter or something measurable atm
