Especially in the darker areas, or entering a dark area

There is fast travel. From what I saw you can fast travel to cities you have been to and to the chocobo posts you find.

I will say though, their NPC design has not improved from Remake

footage they've shown from the tgs demos and gameplay presentation alone have shown off way more stuff to do in the world so I'm definitely not worried there
