If you have a specific person you want to date on the first playthrough I recommend finding side quests with them to up the bond and make the chances higher

my personal theory why XVI sold better is because XVI is tied to Yoshi P and people in the liveservice and MMORPG sphere love Yoshi P. FFXIV is so well known there that Emet Selch dances in front of 400k-2 million people during the World of Warcraft world first race because these players love the competition between WoW and XIV
