medical marijuana for hypoglycemia?

Posted

I know that this topic has somewhat been discussed already and some people, myself included, got very into it. I'm starting this thread because of somethings that I have just been diagnosed with and the doctor suggested medical marijuana, I honestly don't care too much but my parents are strictly against it.So what I'm asking for is advice as to whether or not I should experiment with it, please don't let this get out of hand, I personally won't say too much I'm just here to get suggestions.

Anyway, earlier this month I got a head cold and ever since I haven't been finishing my meals. At first I chalked it up to being sick, and after that I just said as long as I can get a quick snack I should be fine, but a few days ago at tryouts I nearly fainted. So that was the last straw, I told my parents what had been happening and they took me to a nutritionist. She then suggested that I might have hypoglycemia, and the doctor's test proved that to be the case. Anyway, for those who don't know hypoglycemia comes with anxiety, stress, dizziness, night sweats(random sweating in general) and weakness(well atleast those are what I'm experiencing). Anyway due to this stress and a drastic change in scheduling with college, my eating habits have become basically non-existent. Like I would start eating a bagel for breakfast finish about half way through it and feel completely full, but then about an hour later or so I would be starving. Or I would order something for lunch then two bites in I would feel full and not be able to eat another bite, sometimes I have actually walked into a deli, restaurant, or subway and turn right around and walk out cause my stomach felt full and didn't want me eating anything.

So the reason(s) the doctor suggested the marijuana is because it would help relieve the stress, relieve the anxiety, and bring back my appetite(which in the long run would/should help get rid of any dizziness/weakness I feel.)

So that's "my arguement/where I'm coming from" anyway leave your feedback and vote...but again please no arguing, just leave your feedback and be done with it, that would probably be best.

P.S. I have tried it before, and honestly I never got hooked, and I never saw what the big deal about it is. So please don't use "you'll get addicted your first try" as a reason to not take it. I've taken/am currently taking addictive drugs(vicoden) and a. I have pretty good self control, or atleast I think so. b. my parents periodically check on how many pills I have left to make sure I'm not over dosing, so they would take the same approach if they ok the marijuana.

Anyway now I'm done, please leave your suggestions.

I think that maybe it can help certain things. Butt like medicine it will have side effects, can get addicting after a while, and get be overdosed. That is what i think.

Use it if it will help your health. Just be careful with it either way.

you should, its all natural and it has no side effects

Odd, the loss of appetite is not a symptom of hypoglycemia that I am familiar with...oh well, that's neither here nor there.

To answer your question, I don't think the use of marijuana is a good idea. It's something you have to take to be normal. I have some experience with hypoglycemia, and the best way I have seen to deal with it is through proper diet and exercise.

Honestly? It can't hurt to try, right? My opinion is to try it out to see if it actually helps you out. A few of my friends have had to smoke marijuana for this same reason and 1 didn't like it because it didn't help him and the other 2 they said it did help them, but they only use it when necessary. They aren't addicted at all and they don't abuse it. So I say go for it, and if it doesn't help your problem or you just simply dont like it, stop using it.

I wish you lots of luck! Hope you find something that helps you.

I have a question.

Is what you have a hypoglycemic reaction or the condition?

(Explanation to make sure I'm clear: Hypoglycemia is literally "Low blood sugar," a fuel for your body. Anybody that runs low on blood sugar can have a hypoglycemic reaction. There is also a condition called Hypoglycemia which effects a person's ability to deal with sugar, which usually leaves them low. )

I say if there is no other options, you should try it. All medicine have there risks, but your parents will be there to intervene if it starts to look like it's a problem. I think the dangers of using marijuana is not just the drug but the environment they are taken in. If you're being supervised then it should be fine.

And about the vicoden, I've heard some stories where people didn't realize they were addicted to it until they had it taken away xD I know if I don't get my one cup of coffee in the morning, I'll get massive headaches later in the day. Oh the joys of caffeine addiction >.<

You should only use it if YOU think YOU should take the marijuana if you think it will help you. If you do, just make sure you be cautious and not get overdosed.

You can't get physically addicted to pot. Any addiction that stems from it is psychological. But it seems kind of weird that this would be the no.1 suggestion from your doctor...

The loss of appetite isn't a symptom but my nutritionist explained that the stress and anxiety that was being caused by the hypoglycemia might be causing my lack of appetite, so it's not a direct symptom of it more like an after effect. And as for proper diet and exercise that is something I've been doing for awhile, well not lately but still.

Well when I had my blood work done my blood sugar was low(I guess) so my doctor diagnosed me as hypoglycemic. Also, would it really only be a reaction if I have some of the symptoms?

Oh....I thought I was doing good with the vicoden too T-T haha anyway I guess I'll find out in a few days.

It wasn't the FIRST suggestion, it was one of a few.

^ OK, that wasn't really clear to me from the story. Have you decided yet on what you're gonna do?

I've already debated this before. I'll just keep this simple.

Medicinal should be legal, but strictly controlled to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

Regular, perfectly healthy people should not be touching that shit. If you knew even a few things about how Marijuana makes it into the US you wouldn't even want to be near it. For the amount of money you would spend on pot you could spend it on other things that are much more entertaining and offer more bang for your buck.

Honestly, I agree yet disagree at the same time...but I don't want this to become an arguement. Anyway, would you qualify me as someone who is healthy? Or as someone who is sick enough to use it? Because that's what I'm looking for in this topic, I'm not really interested in what people think of the topic in legalizing it, cause that will lead to unwanted hate.

Oh and earth_angel I haven't decided yet. Like I said my parents are against it but the way I see it once I turn 18 in a few months it'll be my call, so I just want to get as many opinions as I can before it officially becomes my choice.

O.O i can't believe you all are discussing this.

If you can eat without any issues, then you don't need it.

The condition only effects your ability to process sugar. It's the reaction your body has to having low blood sugar that the symptoms come from.

A possibility I can conclude from what you've told me is that because your illness before, you haven't been eating enough to keep your blood sugar up, causing you to have a hypoglycemic reaction. Your continued lack of appetite could be a symptom of hypoglycemia as well. This is just conjecture, so don't take my word for it.

If it's just a reaction, once you get your blood sugar back up, you'll be fine. If it's the condition, try to avoid refined sugars. The condition is not a one size fits all kind of thing, so handling it will be what ever works for you.

i think you should try

my aunt has colon cancer (i know, different from what your experincing), and she had a lot of pain from chemo. (is that how you spell it?) anyway, she's in california, so medicinal marijuana is legal. she does, and shes not addicted to it. the only reason she likes it is because it takes away the pain. she has stage 4 or 5 cancer nad shes really glad she does it.

my mom had breast cancer. it was stage 3, but the pain was just as bad. medicinal marijuana isn't legal where i am, so my mom was in a lot of pain. i wish it was legal because there were days were my mom was so weak from treatment that she couldnt get out of bed. she almost had to retire at age 40 because she could go to work only a few days a weak. whats worse is seeing her in that pain and not being able to help.

i dont know how hypoglycemia works, but if its so bad that you can't get out of bed, try medicinal marijuana.

I can eat without it it's just that I feel full when I'm not, then shortly after I get hungry again. Also, ever since I was sick at the beginning of the month I've lost 5 pounds, even though I've been working out and building some muscle. So I need to eat, especially since I'm exercising alot. Also, with my class schedule I don't have times to have snacks throughout the day. I need to eat my meals completely, not just half at a time like I currently am. Anyway I'm rambling...

I guess I wasn't clear enough, probably because I don't completely understand it myself, but my blood sugar was at a pretty good level, sorry I don't remember the readings exactly, but my fasting blood sugar was low, no I don't know the difference. But I get what your saying.

Wow I'm sorry to hear that:/ but I can get out of bed no problem, my only problems are anxiety, stress, and eating problems.

Okay. In the end, this is in your hands. No matter what you decide, I hope I was in some way helpful.
