I don't believe its true form is actually the humanoid heartless we all know and love with them emblem symbol on his chest. I believe the huge fortress, war ship thing was the real heartless and "ansem" form was just riku's own presentation of the darkness he possessed in his heart based on visuals of xehanort the heartless might've somehow injected into his subconscious. I'm basing this off of the fact that the ship thing holds the ansem form inside that pod during the battle, trying to continue to maintain control of riku in order to protect him as well as itself.

It's interesting and when thinking about it, it does make some sort of sense that the Ansem form wasn't the real Xehanort's heartless. But, as it seems that Xehanort's heartless can control other heartless and all heartless can take power from darkness, so by fusing with his guardian and many smaller heartless as he probably did and being in the End of the World, Ansem was surrounded by darkness.

The part about Ansem's form after he took over Riku's body was probably to do with some connection of both Riku and Xehanort/MX. But his cloaked suggests that he does have the ability to change his form, besides that.

like i said, i think the heartless might have somehow injected terra-norts image into rikus mind, and when he awakened the darkness in his heart he subconsciously transforms into that form .. so his heartless would be like a parasite in my theory that controls riku in kh1 till sora was able to dive in and destroy it.

I'm skeptical but won't deny it's possible maybe xehanorts heartless was in two parts a the fortress was his pureblood and an emblem ansem
