As always, the story is about Princess Peach (A.K.A Princess Toadstool for those who call her by her old name) getting captured once again by Bowser and Koopalings. You must travel to each world, defeat that world's castle boss, and retrieve Princess Peach from the evil King Bowser. there really isn't much else to add on the story.
Gameplay:
The game continues the style of gameplay from New Super Mario Bros. Featuring side-scrolling action as either Mario or Luigi in another attempt to rescue princess Peach from King Bowser and the Koopalings. There are also power-ups that make a return from New Super Mario bros., such as the Mega Mushroom, the Mini Mushroom, and the Fire Flower. As well as the return of the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 where you can hover in the air. These are the only power-ups that are featured in the game.
As always, I find the gameplay to be fantastic just like all its other 2D predecessors. The gameplay feels fresh, fun, and interesting. if you are a big fan of the Mario series, then this gameplay may never get old or boring for you. Though I can't say the same to newcomers of the New Super mario bros. series. it may feel or get a bit repetitive for some people. As for the coin collecting element. i find it to be a very fun incentive to playing the game. Especially if you've already beaten the game and haven't collected all 1,000,000 coins yet. it will give you a reason to go back to previous stages and play through them again. Coin Rush mode is great as well. it brings a fun challenge and something new to the table. it's a great way to collect coins faster for those looking for faster ways to collect coins. As for the multiplayer mode. It's fun but I hate having to fight my partner over who controls the screen. i much prefer the multiplayer in New Super Mario bros. DS as it's much more fun. But, other than that, i simply love the game
Presentation:
The graphics are spectacular. At first, i thought that they would use the same graphics from New Super Mario bros DS seeing the first few screenshots of the game from E3 2012. But after playing the game, myself. the graphics were better than i thought it would be. However, i can't say the same about the soundtrack. Everything in the soundtrack is directly ported from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. With the only exception of Reznor's remixed battle theme from Super Mario World. i think that they should have added some new music to the game to make it not feel as if it you are playing the same game. Because it may fee that way for some people.
Verdict:
Overall, I give this game a 8.0/10
