Personally I would like to say the Vice Presidential debate was very well done. Both sides mentioned some valid points and didn't stretch the truth that much. It wasn't as one sided as the first Presidential debate.

At the last update of this thread. There have been 2 polls saying Paul Ryan won and 2 polls saying Joe Biden won.

 

CNBC: "Who do you think won the VP Debate? Paul Ryan: 56%, Joe Biden: 36%, Neither: 8%"

 

CNN Politics: "Who won the debate? Ryan 48% | Biden 44%. (+/-5 MOE)"

 

IP MSNBC: 49.2% of people say Biden won, 34.8% say Ryan won, 16% are indifferent.

 

CBS: 50% say Biden won, 31% Ryan, 16% Tie

 

 

This thread will be updated with polling data as it comes in. UPDATE: I will be going to bed now (rather updating this thread every 10 minutes at this hour is getting tiresome). The next update will come approximately 5:30 EST. By then all polling should be finished and the thread will be finalized. From the looks of things, I feel it's safe to leave this as a tie for the night.

The point of the thread is to allow for the discussion of the debate and it's results as well as provide the results of various polls regarding who won.

I think Biden won, without a doubt. Ryan did alright, and this wasn't as one sided as the first Presidential debate, but he didn't win. Biden was rude, but he had the heart Obama lacked in the first debate. He put his all into it.

 

I swear, Ryan's closing statement could have been a commercial. I won't be surprised if it is turned into a commercial, some how. I also found it funny how, when the moderator posed the question about how the candidates felt about the attack campaign both sides seem to be running on TV, and Ryan took the importunity to attack the Democrats (granted, it wasn't too nasty), while Biden said he regretted some of the things said (even expressing his dislike for the non-approved candidate approved smear campaigns).

Yeah, what I got was that Biden basically said "F*** the commercials". I live in a swing state, I can attest to that!

Interestingly enough, Biden would often complain that he wasn't going to get enough time, however Ryan spoke for a total of 40 minutes whereas Biden Spoke for around 41 minutes and 30 seconds. Practically even, but technically Biden spoke more despite his complaints.

I feel the main issue with Biden in this debate was that he couldn't decide whether he wanted to put up a brutal offense or an impenetrable defense. Yeah, I definitely can see where you're coming from. The changing around was a bit jarring, but I also felt it made it more interesting. Of course, being "interesting" isn't exactly the most important thing in these debates...

 

I must say this debate was far more entertaining than the last one. Both candidates got in a few "OOOOOH" moments on the other, and both were invested in the debate. I was actually wishing for it to continue on for a little longer, while the last one I began wishing it would go faster.

I thought this was true for both candidates.

He may have used his own words, but he still sounded like every Romney/Ryan campaign commercial I've seen.

But I personally felt that while yes, Biden was rude at times, he overall raised the better points out of the two. It's very rare to see a political debate where both sides are complely respectful of each other, He could have been better, yes, but I felt Biden gave the better arguements between the two.

Fair enough. But a good percentage of Americans (sadly, I've found this to be true) base their votes almost entirely off of the commercials and what bits and pieces of the debate they care about. Many of them see Biden as being a jerk, and Ryan as being very calm and thoughtful. Swing voters are going to really like Romney/Ryan a lot more than Obama/Biden. Obama lost the first debate, and now they see Biden being rude. It's a big turn off to many of them.

I'll admit that Biden was more inconsiderate than Romney was, but I would rather see emotion for the topic than the calm repetition of everything we already have heard from their commercials. Biden and Romney put their hearts in their debates, they got their heads in the game and gave it their all, that's why they "won" (IMO). Ryan and Obama, when compared to their opponents, didn't have that. Both were basically regurgitating everything we've been hearing in their campaigns all year, and they didn't do anything to make me believe otherwise. That's what made them lose (again, IMO).

Because, yes, he was just repeating stuff we already knew. But on average it takes about 10 repetitions for something to stick in a person's mind (something I read in Starting A Business for Dummies, so I assume this is accurate). So it might've been a good route for Ryan to start down. Either way, I'd be like, Biden's being a jerk, and I really can't stand bullies, so I'd automatically turn to Ryan.

I disagree with most of what Biden said, but he probably did a better job of getting the point across than Ryan did. Overall I think Ryan did better, mostly because he controlled his temper very well. He was actually better than Biden, but he didn't present himself right. Biden would have won (imo) if he hadn't been such an ass. I think the average person understands that there is fighting in politics, but since most Americans are looking for a president who won't make any more rash decisions, Ryan presented himself very well. Biden seemed very facially upset, and was basically mocking Ryan at times. While he did this, Ryan was very calm and cool, which I think appeals more to voters.

For me, Im putting it more as a draw. If you read the transcript of the debate, it looked like Biden won. If you watched it on TV, it looked like Ryan won. There is an interesting balance of the impression they gave and what facts they laid out. A part of me believes Ryans poker face was tactfully used, since he didnt have to provoke Biden to look bad. He was doing a fine job at that on his own. But I felt Ryan didnt bring as much information to the play or counter strongly against Biden. The winner is most likely in the eye of the beholder.

 

Also, the moderator did a much better job than the last one. The only thing that threw me off was the complete 180 when after talking about security and economy she threw that specific social issue on abortion. If she had connected it to health care it would of made since, but she didnt. It felt very random to throw that question in.
