You know what's ironic? If you look at it it's almost like those two games are like twin brothers. I mean, both OoT and FFVII are one of the most successful and popular games, they both had a prequal (FFVII with Crises Core, and OoT with Skyward Sword), a sequal (FFVII with Advent Children and OoT with Majora's Mask). Both their prequal and sequal are almost as successful as both OoT and FFVII are. You see what I'm saying here? FFVII and OoT are pretty much identical to one-another in almost every way. Ironic, isn't it? I can see why a lot of people like to compare both games to each other. They are like identical twins. OoT is pretty much the most successful game on N64 while FFVII is the most successful game on PS1.

I never noticed that!

And I think both are over-rated. Wow you're tight Tails. :.D

That makes sense, actually. I usually don't think of it that way because they're so different gameplay wise. I've heard the "best game ever" crap for both of them though.

Okay I really hate when people call the most popular games such as FFVII and OoT "over-rated". The only reason i can give as to why people even say that is because people like you get tired of hearing FF and Zelda fanboys/fangirls talk about both games. And you know what? Who can blame them. It's been a big part of their childhood and that's the game most people grew up with and remember the most. So if you're gonna say it's "over-rated" then it's probably because you've never played it as a kid like most people have back in the 90's.

EGGXACTLY!! I love FFX and WW, but they aren't the most popular with both fandoms. I don't talk about 7 unless I'm goofing on it, never enjoyed the game. You'd be surprised on the people who like MM more the OoT. You making it sound like I hate those two ;)

I knew it. And trust me I know a lot about the Zelda fanbase. I've played MM, myself and I can see why most of the Zelda fanbase likes it a bit more than OoT. MM has so much more to offer than OoT had.

I think they only look a like in these economical/franchise way, but not in gameplay, characters, style, music, and preety much everything else.

Well, I wasn't exactly comparing them gameplay, character, style, genre, and graphics wise. i was comparing how they are both popular.

Also, they both came out the same year

And both are rated in an exaggerated fashion, in that they both have clearly superior counterparts but the majority of their fanbase is blinded by the spectacle, or in many cases, the spectacle of their alternative media/spinoffs/sequels

I've always thought it was more fun to compare and contrast the two in terms of content. Personally, I love the fact that Link is the classic hero who embodies virtue and fights for riteous cause, making him the guy everyone wants on their team, yet has to be a mute and void of an immediately noticable personality in order to keep that aura of absolute goodness about him.Cloud is the epitome of anti-hero who's cause is determined by selfish means and whom most people would likely not enjoy hanging out with in real life, while also providing a sense of empowerment in the sense that he does what he wants when he wants without having to have his actions dicated by good and evil.

I mean, right there you have classicism vs. post modernism.

And they told me video games weren't educational...

That's a pretty cool point! I love both of those games, so having similarities just makes me happier to play them.

and there are reasons that there are so many fanboys/girls for those games: they are really good. and also the fact that people grew up with these games. Oot was the reason I got into Zelda, because it was a good game, not because I wanted in on the hype train. and I didn't know about FFVII until Kingdom Hearts, a fact that i'm almost ashamed of lol, but I still love the game because it is what it is: a great RPG with elements that appeal to many gamers. And to me. Do I think it's overrated, definitely (not Oot, that game is fantastic).

Weren't they also both the first games in each series to be all 3D?

Actually yes...I believe you're right. ;)

It's a very interesting point that FFVII and OoT play similar roles on their consoles despite their major differences gameplay-wise. I grew up on OoT and loved it, though I cannot say the same for FFVII. I greatly enjoy FFVII, though I only recently played it because I loved FFVI so much. I can't say that either OoT or FFVII are overrated, however; I believe each one's receiving the amount of love and attention that they deserve.

Then again, everyone's different and has their own personal likes and dislikes. FFVII's definitely not for everyone, I won't try to claim that it is, and overall I think OoT serves a wider variety of gamers. One of the reasons being because, as Dave stated above, Link's a silent protagonist and no one can dislike him, whereas Cloud's really a hit-or-miss figure.

Weren't they also both the first games in each series to be all 3D?

VII has 3D models for characters, but the environments are 2D images

X was the first fully 3D FF
