Aeris went to Aerith actually. As for Leon and Squall, Squall said he became Leon because he didn't feel like he deserved to be called Squall after letting his world be taken by the Heartless

Leon means lion in Spanish. So I am assuming Squall prefers to be called Leon.

Aeris is a bad translation of Aerith

With Leon it was some...symbolism bullshit. I think it had something to do with him not being able to save RG so he "changed" his name to separate himself from who he once was.

With Aerith it was always supposed to be THAT (<) particular spelling but it was mistranslated in the English localization of FFVII, mostly because the "th" sound doesn't exist in Japanese, so despite the intention they had to spell it the best way they could. In Japanese the "th" sound is usually substituted with an "s".

Also, his last name is LEONhart.

These.

It's because Squall used to also be a member of Star Wolf.

(Annoying bird!)

Well, since everyone's explained the story reason for Squall changing his name (and that "Aeris" was a translation mistake), I'll explain the creators' reason for changing "Squall" to "Leon". Basically? They wanted it to be a surprise for FF fans to see Squall appear in Traverse Town, and since the surprise would have been spoiled if you read in Mickey's letter "go find Squall", they decided to change his name to "Leon", so fans could get the full weight of his appearance in that cutscene.

Also, his last name is LEONhart.

Therefore he didn't change his name - he's just using a different part of it.

I can't remember exactly how it goes for Leon, but I thought his true name was Leon in FF8, but everyone called him Squall because he preferred it.

As for Aerith, her name was always meant to be "Aerith," but they mistranslated her name from Japanese in the original FF7 release to Aeris, which they later corrected in future installments (i.e. Crisis Core).

As previously said Aeris was a translation error. Leon was just him going by the Leon part of Leonart.
