Sony Wants the PS4 To be More Than Just Shooters

Posted

When Sony announced the PlayStation 4 in February, the first title shown off for the next-generation platform was not a big-budget blockbuster, but rather Sony Japan's Knack. Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained to Edge that this was intentional and meant to demonstrate that the PS4 will offer more than just action and shooter games.

"It was pretty intentional," Yoshida said. "We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games, but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."

Big-budget games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub were shown later during the meeting, but Yoshida contends that the PS4 is capable of more than just beefed-up graphics.

"Yeah, so almost the biggest message that we wanted to send in preparing for the event as well as in designing PS4 was…we at Sony and we at Sony Computer Entertainment, it's just natural for us to enhance the core technology and performance of the hardware, but it’s not the hardware that is the biggest focus," he said.

The PS4 is officially due out this holiday season, though region-specific availability is unknown. According to a past report, the system will launch in November beginning at $430.

YAAAY!!!!

This is good news, honestly getting sick of FPS aside from TF2 and a few others

They are doing good things with the PS4. Very good things

Too bad. We could use a system on the market with pretty much all FPS titles...

oh wait

Well thank god. I'm glad they realize that it's not all about the hardware, but the software, rather.

And $430? I guess I won't be getting it until much later past the release (and I haven't even bought a Wii U yet).

Amen, and only $430 that's promising... still won't be getting one for a while though.

I've never been worried that Sony doesn't support variety. Just now I stopped playing some Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and was thinking "This game is great, and I don't think the other platforms would've supported it the way Sony has." Whether or not that's true I don't know, but I do know that I can count on Xbox for shooters, Nintendo for icons, and Playstation for both, and usually most things in between.

(NOT bashing any system, just stating my personal outlook)

good, I love FPS, but not every damn game that's out -_- that's why I barely game anymore :/

I've honestly gotten completely drained of FPS. The past 4 or 5 years or so of gaming have been FPS after FPS with only a few scattered attempts to try something new with the gameplay (TF2, DUST 514, Tribes Ascend etc)

YES!!! Ive been  getting really sick of all the FPS's lately. WE NEED MORE RPG'S, FIGHTING, AND ACTION ADVENTURE GAMES.

Man this is good news while i rather enjoy FPS and Action Adventure games, and they make up most of my collection i want more PS RPGs i mean there are like 2 handfulls of good RPGs. Yea there were a lot of Action RPGs but sometimes i just want a good non final fantasy JRPG like the Tales series i mean i havent even finished Graces f yet and its one of my favorite JRPGs. i mean unlike Microsoft, Sony is based in Japan so i think they should give more of the Japan exclusive RPGs a chance over seas.

Awesome! Shame it is so expensive.

Cant say the same for Microsoft.
